Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mrs. Norris
Answer: Petrified
Mrs. Norris is the first of Hogwarts' residents to be petrified in "Chamber of Secrets" and while she is a cat she is no less a warning for the students and staff of the school, especially since her body is displayed alongside a message scrawled in blood on a hall wall: "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened, enemies of the heir... beware." It's later determined that Ginny wrote the message, compelled by Tom Riddle's diary. Fortunately for Mrs. Norris (and Argus Filch, her owner), she only saw the gaze of the basilisk through the reflection in the water flooding from the nearby girls' bathroom.
2. Colin Creevey
Answer: Petrified
One of the newer students at Hogwarts, Colin Creevey is an unfortunate early victim of petrification saved from almost certain death because he keeps his camera close. When the basilisk passed through and gazed towards him, he snapped a photo of it, protecting himself by looking into its eyes through the device.
When others attempted to look at his film to see if there was evidence to follow, all they found was a destroyed roll in the camera; the basilisk's gaze destroyed it.
3. Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington
Answer: Petrified
Nearly Headless Nick is the only person in the film (and the era) to look directly at the basilisk but since he's already a ghost, he couldn't die more than once. As such, when he's found in one of the halls of the school (alongside Hufflepuff student Justin Finch-Fletchley), the staff is forced to use a fan to blow him to the hospital wing.
It's not known how Sir Nicholas is cured of petrification along with the still-living victims, but he's back to normal by the film's end.
4. Justin Finch-Fletchley
Answer: Petrified
Though Justin Finch-Fletchley doesn't have much of a role in the film, he does end up becoming one of the basilisk's victims and continues the streak of students fortunate enough to avoid staring directly at the creature. The only reason he manages to survive the basilisk's gaze is because he manages to see the creature through Nearly Headless Nick, letting the incorporeal spirit take the brunt of its dark power.
5. Hermione Granger
Answer: Petrified
One of the toughest hurdles for Harry and Ron to overcome is the petrification of Hermione Granger who, moments before encountering the basilisk, cracked the code about the creature, rushing from the library with a scrap of paper explaining important information.
Hermione was found in the hallway alongside another petrified student, Penelope Clearwater, and a small hand mirror which, as was later discovered, was used to help her avoid staring directly at the basilisk. It was exactly this that saved the girls.
6. Moaning Myrtle
Answer: Not Petrified
Myrtle Warren, killed in 1943 and fated to reside in the second-floor girls' bathroom, was never petrified by the basilisk because she looked directly at it, becoming the only victim of the creature when Tom Riddle was a student at the establishment. It's her presence in the bathroom that allows Harry and Ron to deduce the whereabouts of the Chamber of Secrets, hidden underneath the sinks and accessible with the use of parseltongue, a gift Harry is determined to have attained when Lord Voldemort attempted to kill him many years ago.
7. Ginny Weasley
Answer: Not Petrified
Though Ginny Weasley was not petrified she was an integral part of Harry's second year, managing to become fascinated by Tom Riddle's (Lord Voldemort's) magical journal and aid his spirit in helping reopen the Chamber of Secrets. It's she who wrote the message on the school wall after Mrs. Norris was petrified. Harry and Ron later head into the Chamber in an effort to save her from almost certain death at Riddle's hands.
8. Ron Weasley
Answer: Not Petrified
Though Ron is at risk throughout the film, he's never petrified, perhaps being one of the people coming closest to the basilisk in its lair without actually encountering it. He and Harry descend into the Chamber of Secrets alongside Gilderoy Lockhart, the professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts, but he remains back with Lockhart when a faulty spell causes the cavern to cave in.
It's because of this that Harry heads into the chamber alone.
9. Professor Sprout
Answer: Not Petrified
Though Professor Sprout does not get petrified she does play a critical role in this film as the Professor of Herbology. It's only using her Mandrakes, when they're mature, that the staff of Hogwarts can create the Mandrake Restorative Draught and restore the petrified students to their healthy, mobile selves. None of the staff of Hogwarts ends up petrified in the film.
10. Tom Riddle
Answer: Not Petrified
Tom Riddle isn't completely real, at least not when Harry Potter comes face-to-face with him in the Chamber of Secrets. The boy who would become Lord Voldemort, Tom Riddle is the author of the diary that mysteriously comes into Ginny Weasley's possession after a trip to Diagon Alley.
By the end of the film, Riddle is nearly able to see his plan to restore himself to fruition, but using the basilisk's fang, Harry pierces the diary, one of Voldemort's horcruxes, and puts an end to the lingering spirit.
