Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At one point in "Earth vs. the Spider" (1958), it appears that the spider is dead. What awakens the arachnid, which creature was first removed to the high school gymnasium?

Answer: live rock-and-roll music

Mister Kingman, the science teacher, together with the sheriff, goes to the spider's cave and sprays it thoroughly with all of the DDT in town. The spider's apparently dead body is removed from the cave to the gymnasium of the high school. The students whose band will perform for the school dance rehearse some of their music in that same gym. The loud rock-and-roll music awakens the drowsing arachnid which then knocks down the building's wall, killing the janitor.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: Delicious Brains

"The Brain Eaters" (1958) had a variety of working titles: "The Keepers," "The Keepers of the Earth," Attack of the Blood Leeches," and "Battle of the Brain Eaters." "Creature with the Atom Brain" (1955) features a Nazi scientist who creates radioactive zombies.

In "Donovan's Brain" (1953), a medical doctor tries to keep a millionaire's brain alive in a sort of electric soup. Delicious Brains is a worldwide company that builds plugins for WordPress. In "The Return of the Living Dead" (1985), a zombie woman explains to Ernie Kaltenbrunner that being dead hurts because you can feel yourself rot and that eating brains makes the pain go away.

In "From Beyond" (1986), Crawford Tillinghast says "It ate him ... bit off his head ... like a gingerbread man!" There does not seem to be a movie called "Delicious Brains" made in the 1950s.
3. What sort of monsters threaten the survival of the seven people harbouring in Commander Maddison's ranch house in "Day the World Ended" (1955)?

Answer: humans mutated by radiation

Apparently the longer those people not killed by the atomic blasts are exposed to ambient radiation, the more they transform into ghastly homicidal creatures. They kill people and thrive on eating animals which are themselves also irradiated.
4. Which actor played radar-expert and pilot Mitch Macafee in "The Giant Claw" (1957)?

Answer: Jeff Morrow

Producer Sam Katzman and director Frederick Francis Sears wanted either Richard Carlson or John Agar to star opposite Mara Corday playing the character Sally Caldwell, an attractive mathematician. Jeff Morrow was on contract to Universal-International and got good reviews for his roles in "This Island Earth" (1955) and "The Creature Walks Among Us" (1956).

He had played Dick Tracy both on Broadway and on radio. His acting was noted by critics as the best of all those appearing in "The Giant Claw."
5. What did the tree-dwelling women teach the cave-dwelling men in "Prehistoric Women" (1950)?

Answer: how to move a big rock with a lever

Tigri, the leader of the women, played by Laurette Luez, tries to instruct Engor, the leader of the men, played by Allan Nixon, how life works in the camp of the women. She shows him how to use a stout pole to move a huge rock, demonstrating the principle of the lever. Renaissance scientists described the lever as one of the six simple machines.

There is evidence of the use of levers in the Ancient Near East sometimes around 5000 BC, in Ancient Egypt around 4400 BC, and in Mesopotamia around 3000 BC. Tigri knew how to use it much earlier.
6. Who directed "A Bucket of Blood" (1959)?

Answer: Roger Corman

Roger Corman's reputation was for quickly-shot, low-budget films of especial interest to teenagers at drive-in theatres. Many of his films were of the horror and science-fiction genre. Others were about sexy teenagers. A very few of his movies were outright comedies: "A Bucket of Blood" (1959), "The Little Shop of Horrors" (1960), and "Creature from the Haunted Sea" (1961).
7. Is the lizard used to depict a gila monster in "The Giant Gila Monster" (1959) a gila monster?

Answer: No

There are only two species remaining in the genus Heloderma. These are the gila monster (H. suspectum) and the Mexican beaded lizard (H. horridum). This genus has existed for at least the last 23 million years. The "Gila monster" in the movie is actually a Mexican beaded lizard. Both are large, stout and venomous.

The beaded lizard (the one actually shown in the movie) has a longer tail, is leaner, and spends more time in trees than does its relative.
8. For what are the Lydecker Brothers best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: special effects

Howard "Babe" Lydecker (1911-1969) and Theodore Lydecker (1908-1990) were brothers and partners in creating special effects, especially for Republic Pictures. They specialized in miniature effects, producing and photographing them on a contract basis for moviemakers.

They were twice nominated for a Best Visual Effects Academy Awards but did not win. They won an Emmy for their work on the television series "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964-1968). Among the films featuring their work were "Adventures of Captain Marvel" (1941), "Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe" (1953), and "Radar Men from the Moon" (1952).
9. Where is the motion picture "Warning from Space" (1956) set?

Answer: Tokyo, Japan

Flying saucers are seen in the skies over Tokyo, Japan. In addition to the scenes depicting the alien space station from which these spacecraft are launched, the events in "Warning from Space" (1956) occur in and around Greater Tokyo.
10. What happens to the monster masks in Peter Dumond's home at the end of "How to Make a Monster" (1958)?

Answer: They are burnt up in a house fire.

Peter takes Larry and Tony to his home for a farewell party, given that he's been fired and convinced them that their film careers are over. His home is a sort of temple dedicated to all of the monsters he has created in his twenty-five-year career. When the boys discover that they are locked in, there is a struggle in which Larry knocks over a candelabra.

The living room catches fire, as do the masks displayed there, as does Pete, who dies in the fire. The police rescue Larry and Tony. The masks used to film this scene included masks created by movie make-up master Paul Blaisdell, some of which were sadly damaged in shooting the scene.
