1. What is the name of the flowery character who longs to be an actress?

Answer: Magnolia

Magnolia is Captain Andy's daughter. She is naive and doesn't understand that acting is not all it appears to be. However, she gets her chance when Julie leaves the showboat.

2. What addiction does Gaylord have?

Answer: gambling

Gaylord Revenal is a gambler who is in town while the "Show Boat" is there performing at the beginning of the movie. He meets Magnolia and the two "Only Make Believe" (as the song title says), what it would be like to be in love. They get married, but he continues gambling and eventually leaves her because of his addiction.

He explains that now he also had "black blood". However, Julie's an alcoholic, and Steve cannot handle it and eventually leaves her.

Queenie is a strong and independent woman who works in the kitchen. However, she loves her husband, Joe, and is loyal to him, even though they argue often.

Perhaps the best-known recording of "Ol' Man River" is the version sung by Paul Robeson. The song essentially says this is what is happening in our lives (the African Americans), but despite everything, the Mississippi River just keeps "rolling along". Perhaps what makes this song stand out is the fact that it was written for a bass singer, when usually, in musicals, the big numbers like this would go to a tenor or a baritone.
