Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Notorious

"Notorious" was a 1946 Hitchcock spy thriller in which US agent TR Devlin (Cary Grant) recruited Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman), the daughter of a German war criminal, to infiltrate a group of German pharmaceutical executives. The two fell in love but Huberman was instructed to seduce an executive Alex Sebastian (Claude Rains). This was Hitchcock's first attempt to tackle a serious love story, and the chemistry between the two leads made it so much easier for Hitchcock. In a 1999 biography of Hitchcock, author Leonard Leff wrote: "The romantic pairing of Grant and Bergman promised a box office bang comparable to an atomic blast." An original producer wanted Joseph Cotton to take the lead role as Grant was unavailable for three months but Hitchcock insisted on Grant.

The movie was a critical and commercial success with accolades for Hitchcock's direction, the three leads' performances (ironically only Rains was nominated for an Oscar) and clever, topical themes. It appeared on many top ten and top 100 lists of greatest movies of all time.
2. From Here To Eternity

"From Her to Eternity" was a big-budget American war drama concerning three US soldiers (Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, and Frank Sinatra) stationed in Hawaii before the Pearl Harbor attack and Deborah Kerr and Donna Reed as the women in their lives. It won eight Academy Awards from 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Whilst Reed and Sinatra won Best Supporting Oscars for their roles, it was THAT kiss between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr on the beach that epitomised the whole movie and that short scene endured as the focal point of the entire movie. Whilst the kiss was used in the promotional material for the movie and both Lancaster and Kerr were Oscar-nominated, there was conjecture at the time that the scene was considered too 'racy' for the two leads to win.

In 2002, the movie was chosen for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
3. Bonnie and Clyde

"Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) broke new ground in the movie-making business with its graphic display of violence and its liberal (for the times) depiction of sex. The movie was meant to be a biography of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, who were outlaws and romantic partners in the 1930s American South. They were on the run from the law. The plot reflected Parker and Barrow's lives until they were fatally shot by law enforcement. The movie contained several inaccuracies for the sake of dramatic effect. It was the sleeper hit of the year, eventually becoming a commercial success, and earned 10 Academy Award nominations, winning two.

The movie's success was due in no small way to the chemistry between the two leads. Warren Beatty bought the screen rights to the movie, co-wrote the screenplay, and was the film's producer. He was always going to play the male lead, Clyde Barrow. Many years later it would seem unthinkable that anyone other than Faye Dunaway, who was Oscar-nominated for the role, would play Bonnie Parker. However many actresses were considered for the role before Dunaway including Shirley MacLaine (Beatty's sister), Jane Fonda, Tuesday Weld, Ann-Margret, Sharon Tate, Leslie Caron, Cher and Natalie Wood.

In 1992, "Bonnie and Clyde" was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. The movie ranked 27th on the American Film Institute's 1998 list of the 100 greatest American films.
4. Smokey and The Bandit

In 1977, "Smokey and The Bandit" saw the unlikely pairing of Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields make an improvised action movie the second-highest grossing domestic film of 1977 in the United States and a worldwide hit.

Directed and written by stuntman Hal Needham, the plot concerns Bo "Bandit" Darville (Reynolds) and Cledus "Snowman" Snow (Reed) accepting an $80,000 bet to drive from Georgia to Texas to get a truckload of beer from Texarkana TX to Atlanta GA in 28 hours. Snowman drove the truck and Bandit drove a Pontiac Trans-Am as a blocker. The plan was compromised when runaway bride Carrie (Fields) jumped in Bandit's car to escape her fiance, a not-very-smart son of the very Sheriff who was pursuing Bandit. Bandit called her Frog because she was very 'jumpy' when he first met her. The show had some set action pieces but it was the chemistry between the two leads that made the movie such a hit.

The two became a couple for the next three years and dated for a further two. In that time they filmed four movies together. In 2016, Reynolds was quoted in "The Daily Mail" that Fields was "the love of my life".
5. Romancing the Stone

"Romancing the Stone" was a 1984 romantic comedy-adventure film produced by Michael Douglas, who starred in the movie with Kathleen Turner. Danny DeVito was cast as the movie's villain. The plot was a throwback to the Saturday morning serials of yesteryear where timid American novelist Joan Wilder teamed up with likeable rogue, bird hunter Jack Colton, to trek through the Colombian jungle to rescue Wilder's kidnapped sister and find the hidden treasure (an enormous emerald). It was an implausible plot for a contemporary movie and Douglas had difficulty getting the movie made. Actors considered for the lead included Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, Sylvester Stallone and Christopher Reeve before Douglas hired himself as Jack. Debra Winger was the studio's first choice but Turner landed the role based on her role as a femme fatale in "Body Heat" (1981).

Studio executives expected the movie to fail but it was 20th Century Fox's only big hit for 1984 grossing US$115 million.

Rotten Tomatoes, a movie review aggregator, stated "86% of 56 critics' reviews were positive, with an average rating of 7.2/10", and summarised: "'Romancing the Stone'... [is] an action-filled adventure enlivened by the sparkling chemistry between its well-matched leads." Robert Ebert, a noted film reviewer, called it "a silly, high-spirited chase picture", saying he "greatly enjoyed the film's imaginative perils, colourful cast of villains, and believable relationship between its two lead characters".

The three leads reprised their roles in the sequel "The Jewel of The Nile" a year later.
6. Pretty Woman

"Pretty Woman" (1990) was a romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Vivian Ward (Roberts) was a call girl hired by a businessman Edward Lewis (Gere) as an escort for an entire week to attend business and social functions. The unlikely couple fell for each other during that time but at the end of the week, they both went their separate ways. Lewis re-considered and went back to 'rescue' Vivian from her not-so-good life.

The critics gave "Pretty Woman" mixed reviews on release, due mainly to the glamorisation of prostitution, but gave widespread and deserved praise for Roberts' performance and her chemistry with Gere. The movie was a huge commercial success grossing US$463.4 million worldwide which at the time of its release was the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.
7. The Bodyguard

Whitney Houston in her acting debut in 1992 played an Academy Award-winning actress, Rachel Marron, who was being sent death threats. Kevin Costner was the eponymous bodyguard, Frank Farmer, hired to protect her. Of course, initially, the two did not get on, believing each other's profession interfered with their own. And just as predictably they fell in love and Frank took a bullet to save Rachel's life. The interesting part of "The Bodyguard" was the change in the two leads who disliked each other but were attracted to each other, gradually letting their defences slip away.

The critics panned the movie - Metacritic, a website that coalesces movie reviews, gave the film "a score of 38 out of 100 based on reviews from 20 critics". However, the paying audiences loved it, helped by the best-selling soundtrack of all time (in 1992) and the 24 million sales of Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You" which became the best-selling single by a female artist of all time.

The movie grossed US$411 million worldwide and was the tenth highest-grossing movie of all time in 1993.
8. Speed

"Speed" was a 1994 action thriller starring Keanu Reeves as an LAPD bomb disposal officer and Sandra Bullock as a bus passenger. The bus carrying Annie and later Jack was found to be armed with a bomb that would detonate if its speed dropped below 50 mph unless US$3.7 million was paid as ransom. The bus driver was killed by the felon Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper) who could monitor the bus interior remotely and secretly. Annie took over driving the bus while Jack figured out how to get the passengers safely off the bus without letting the bus drop below 50mph. He managed this after a series of obstacles and Jack and Annie fell into each other's arms literally as they were the last two off the bus before it exploded. Annie was then kidnapped by Payne, who loaded her up with a bomb vest. Jack chased Payne with Annie into the subway system and killed Payne in a fight on top of a moving subway train, then saved Annie. Happy ending.

Critics and audiences loved this movie. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 95% approval rating based on 73 reviews and the movie grossed US$351 million against a budget of US$34 million. While the action sequences were original and were a major contribution to the enjoyment of the movie, the chemistry between Reeves and Bullock was also a major factor. Neither was the first choice for the two lead roles. Stephen Baldwin, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Wesley Snipes, and Woody Harrelson were all considered before Reeves. Similarly, Halle Berry, Ellen DeGeneres, Meryl Streep, Kim Basinger, and Anne Heche were all offered or were considered for the role before Ms Bullock. She had to audition alongside Reeves who was already cast as Jack, to make sure they had on-screen chemistry. It was only then that Sandra Bullock was cast in what was to become a breakthrough role for her.
9. Jerry Maguire

Tom Cruise played the title role in this 1996 movie. He played a sports agent with a conscience who was fired from Sports Management International and left to start his own more honest sports management agency and asked if anyone at SMI wanted to join him. Only single mother Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger) agreed to join him. Jerry was only able to retain one client, footballer Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr. who won a Best Supporting Oscar for his performance). Despite the lack of any income from Maguire's new venture, he became close with Dorothy's son Ray and eventually started a romantic relationship with Dorothy. However, with no income Dorothy wanted to move to San Diego for a job with health benefits. As Maguire did not want to lose her, he proposed marriage so she could share his health benefits. However, the basis of the marriage was not good despite Dorothy being smitten with Jerry. Jerry had a breakthrough with Rod and secured him a high-paying football contract from which Jerry earned a sizable percentage. Jerry then realised that he loved Dorothy and found her at a meeting of a divorcee support group. He pleaded with her to return as he needed her and told her "You complete me," to which she quipped, "Shut up... you had me at hello."

The chemistry between the two was palpable. Zellweger in a breakout role was lovely as the smitten Dorothy. Cruise was charismatic as ever playing Maguire and did fine work as he realised all-too-slowly what Dorothy meant to him. The movie was a commercial and critical success with Zellweger and Gooding Jr receiving as many plaudits as Cruise.
10. Notting Hill

"Notting Hill" (1999) saw America's sweetheart with the megawatt smile Julia Roberts playing Anna Scott and teaming up with a bumbling Englishman with a boyish charm (Hugh Grant playing William Thacker). Throw in a script by Richard Curtis and good supporting actors like Rhys Ifans (Thacker's flatmate, Spike) and you have most of the ingredients for a great movie. Which indeed "Notting Hill" was. From the film's own web page, Curtis started with the idea of a very normal person going out with an unbelievably famous person and how that impinges on their lives. Anna Scott was in London to shoot a movie and wandered into William Thacker's bookshop. The two are attracted to one another but are so far apart in their daily lives, that the thought of getting together was impossible. They kept bumping into each other literally, so they did get together but their different lifestyles clashed and they were forced apart. When Anna came back to London and found William, she professed her love for him. William gently turned her down, explaining that he could not "recover if she left him again". William's bevy of friends intervened, convinced him he had done the wrong thing and dragged him off to Anna's last press conference before she returned to the US that night. The two reconciled and Anna stayed in London with William.

The movie was a resounding success both critically and commercially. While the movie had few flaws, the cinema-goer came away with the chemistry between Roberts and Grant at the forefront of what made that movie enjoyable. What was remarkable was that there were no other lead actors considered for the roles. Curtis had written his best scripts when Grant played lead and indeed, Curtis wrote the role of Thacker specifically for Grant. Curtis also wrote the role of Anna specifically for Julia Roberts but did not expect her to accept. After reading the script, Roberts said that she was "going to have to do this" according to the "Notting Hill" web page.
11. Atonement

"Atonement", a 2007 film based on the 2001 novel by Ian McEwan, tells the story of Cecelia (Keira Knightley), a daughter of the wealthy Tallis family, and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), the Tallis' housekeeper's son who, together had a secret romance in 1935. Cecelia's younger sister Briony, 13, misinterprets a series of events that implicates Robbie, wrongly, in a rape for which he is arrested and jailed. The second part of the novel occurred four years later. Robbie had been released on the condition he fought in the Battle of France in WWII. He met up with Cecelia, now a nurse in London, and the two continued their relationship. The third part of the novel took place in the present day when Briony, a successful novelist was giving an interview about her latest book, an autobiographical novel called "Atonement". The audience learned that the part of the book where Cecelia and Robbie met up again in London was fictitious as Cecelia died in an Underground bomb attack in the early part of the war and Robbie died of wound complications in France. They never reunited. Briony wrote her novel with its fictitious ending to give them the happiness they never had because of her wrong accusation in 1935.

The movie was a critical and commercial success because it was a well-thought-out adaptation of the novel, and the chemistry between Knightly and McAvoy was palpable. The performance of Saoirse Ronan as young Briony was also praised and was a launching pad for her career.
12. Silver Linings Playbook

This 2012 romantic comedy based on a novel of the same name by Matthew Quick told the story of "Pat" Solitano Jr. (Bradley Cooper), who was released from a psychiatric hospital and returned to live with his parents (Robert De Niro and Jackie Weaver). Pat desperately wanted to reconcile with his estranged wife, Nikki. He met Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence), a 21-year-old widow with her own mental health issues, who offered to help with 'the Nikki reconciliation' if he joined her in a dance competition. Of course, the reconciliation never occurred and eventually Pat realised Tiffany was the one he must be with.

The chemistry between the two leads was a joy to watch particularly the dance scenes (performed in entirety by Lawrence and Cooper). The two leads did not carry the movie as there are strong performances all around but their performances were critically acclaimed: "The Hollywood Reporter" through David Rooney said that "the chemistry between Cooper and Lawrence makes them a delight to watch". Metacritic gave the movie a score of 81 based on 45 reviews indicating "universal acclaim".

Incredibly, Cooper and Lawrence were not the first choices for their roles. Anne Hathaway was cast as Tiffany before scheduling conflicts made her drop out. Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Angelina Jolie, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough and Olivia Wilde were all considered. Lawrence was initially considered too young (she was 21 at the time) to play a widow. Vince Vaughn and Mark Wahlberg were considered for the role of Pat before it was offered to Cooper.
