Everyone's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) Quiz

This is one of my favorite songs and I do not believe it is as well known as it should be. It is by Baz Luhrmann. I got a lot of info from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wear_Sunscreen

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following does Baz not recommend to do?

Answer: Give

Baz gives quite a bit of advice throughout his song and drops a few one word suggestions. However, "Give" is not one of them.

He also encourages us to "Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your own living room."
2. What does Baz state worrying is equal to?

Answer: Trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum

The full lyric is as follows:

"Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum."

The song was a worldwide mega hit, becoming a cult hit in the US, reaching #45 on the Billboard Hot 100, and reaching #1 in the UK and Ireland.
3. Baz tells the class not to worry if you do not know what to do with your life. What age does he say that some of the most interesting people he knows still have not figured this out?

Answer: 40

He begins be stating that he knows some very interesting people at 22 that have not figured this out and follows up with interesting people at 40 that still do not know.
4. What does he mention that you'll miss when they're gone?

Answer: Your knees

"Be kind to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone."

The mix was conceived and directed by "BLAM", a music production team comprised of both Baz Luhrmann and Anton Monsted.
5. What does he state is the best instrument that you'll ever own?

Answer: Your body

"Enjoy your body, use it every way you can...don't be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own."

As he states earlier, this is not the exact truth but his own meandering experience.
6. Baz tells you to remember compliments you receive and to forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, what does he suggest?

Answer: That you tell him how

He hints that this is not possible because he has not figured it out. Thus, he asks you to tell him how. It is not easy to shrug off insults but it is certainly important for personal growth.
7. Why does Baz tell you NOT to buy beauty magazines?

Answer: They will only make you feel ugly

Many people have become anorexic or bulimic by looking at people like Kate Moss on magazines like "Glamor" and "Vogue".

The song is a remix of "Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)" performed by Quindon Tarver in Luhrmann's 1996 film "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet". He definitely updates it to modern times.
8. Baz also suggest not to mess too much with your hair. He hints that if you do, that by age 40, you will look how old?

Answer: 85

Again, this is his opinion but he helps us experience ourselves in a historical moment, in the life of the internet, an example of how massive publishing power is in the hands of anyone with access to a PC. This is someone that everyone can relate to.
9. Baz states that when you are older, you will fantasize about what?

Answer: All of these

He follows this up by stating "respect your elders".

"Everyone's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" was originally a column by Mary Schmich which ran in the Chicago Tribune, June 1, 1997. Luhrmann set it to music and released it in 1998.
10. Baz suggests that advice is a form of nostalgia.

Answer: True

"Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth."

Mary Schmich's column became a part of urban myth when the rumor started that it was a commencement address by Kurt Vonnegut to MIT's graduating class of 1997.
