Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Horton's first hit, "When It's Springtime in Alaska", where did the singer, Horton, mush (come) from?

Answer: Point Barrow

Johnny Horton was a fisherman for awhile in Alaska. It was in Alaska that he started seriously writing songs.

Point Barrow is where Wiley Post and Will Rogers crashed in a light plane being flown by Post, in 1935, killing them both.
2. 'When It's Springtime in Alaska" also states what city or town he pulled into. What was it?

Answer: Fairbanks

Mushing is sled dog racing in Alaska. Which is its state sport. The biggest sled race is the Iditarod. The most famous event on this historical trail was the 1925 relay mushing of serum to stop the Diphtheria epidemic in Nome.
3. What was the name of the girl who was singing the song "When It's Springtime In Alaska"?

Answer: Redheaded Lil

Johnny Horton was on the Louisiana Hayride, out of Shreveport, LA. All four of his saga songs crossed over onto the Pop charts.
4. The song "The Battle of New Orleans" tells when this event takes place. It is the first line of the song. When did they take a little trip?

Answer: 1814

The actual battle did not take place until January 8, 1815. The War of 1812 was over by then and the treaty signed in December 1814. Jackson and his army were in New Orleans in 1814. So I suppose the song is correct.
5. How many British were beating on the drums in the 'Battle of New Orleans'?

Answer: "Must have been a hundred of them"

The movie "The Buccaneers" directed by Cecil B DeMille is about Jackson and the Battle of New Orleans. The movies stars Charlton Heston as Jackon and Yul Brynner as Jean LaFitte, the Pirate. I've tried to watch this. It is a true yawner. The battle scene is great, however.
6. In 'The Battle of New Orleans' song Horton calls the rifles the men fought with by a special name. What is it?

Answer: Squirrel Guns

Well, the Squirrel Gun was actually the Kentucky Rifle. Which was actually made first in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The rifle was deadly at 200 yards and in the hands of Jackson's Kentucky and Tennessee militiamen, shot the British flat before they could even get in range to fire their muskets.
7. How fast did the British run after the second shot in the 'Battle of New Orleans'?

Answer: "They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch them."

This song by Johnny Horton was not so sad and more humorous and upbeat than "When It's Springtime in Alaska". This was one of the biggest hits in 1959 and Horton also won a Grammy for the song in 1959.
8. In the song "Sink The Bismarck" when does Horton say that the War has just begun?

Answer: May of 1941

Okay, World War II started in September 1939. By May of 1941, the war had been going on for nearly 21 Months. The battle between the Bismarck and the Hood did happen in May 24, 1941. So that is where the date comes from.
9. In the song 'Sink the Bismarck', how far away was the Bismarck when it started firing on the Hood?

Answer: 15 Miles

According the Wikipedia, the Bismarck was only 11 miles away when she started to engage the Hood. Whether 15 or 11 miles, that is still a very long way to fire successfully on another ship.

Twenty-Two Miles was the maximum range of Bismarck's guns.
10. According to the song how big where the Bismarck's guns and shells?

Answer: Guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees

The main armament for the Bismarck was 8-15" guns. There was also the very excellent German Gunnery on the Bismarck.
11. Johnny Horton's "North to Alaska" was the title song of an action/adventure movie. Who starred as Big Sam McCord?

Answer: John Wayne

This movie was made in 1960 and was directed by Henry Hathaway, who also directed John Wayne in the Oscar winning role as Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit".
12. When did Big Sam leave Seattle in the song 'North to Alaska'?

Answer: In the year of 92

Sam may have left Seattle in 1892, but gold was not found or the gold rush didn't start until 1896 in the Yukon area. The flood of gold seekers didn't get started going good until 1898. The gold rush to Nome didn't start until 1899.
13. Who was Sam's partner in "North to Alaska"?

Answer: George Pratt

Frankie Canon, as played by Ernie Kovacs was the heavy/villain in the movie and Billy, George's little brother was played by Fabian. Karl Swenson played Lars Nordquist, Sam's old logging boss.

Answer: below that old White mountain just little southeast of Nome

The honeymoon home was to be for his fiancee Jenny. When Sam goes back to Seattle to bring her back for George, Sam finds her already married. So he brings back Michelle "Angel" Bonet.
15. What river did Sam, George and Billy cross to find the bonanza gold in the song 'North to Alaska'?
