Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Touring at age 11, which composer is considered the greatest pianist of the Romantic Era?

Answer: Clara Schumann

Like Mozart before her, Clara was considered a prodigy. In addition to playing and composing, she changed the overall format of piano recitals, making them less "showy" and more about the music.
2. Later to become the inspiration for the musical "Rent", what was Puccini's most famous opera?

Answer: La Boheme

Puccini was inspired by the Realism movement of his time. In 1996, Johnathan Larson debuted "Rent" as a modern retelling of this tragic story.
3. Which composer, who tragically died at the age of 31, was not allowed by law to marry his love because he didn't make enough money?

Answer: Franz Schubert

At the time, there was a law that stated that men could not propose to women if they didn't make enough money to support her. Since Schubert's income was dependent upon people buying his music, he did not qualify.
4. Who was famous for composing ballets such as "The Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake"?

Answer: Tchaikovsky

He was also famous for experimenting with different meters, which made choreographing dances more challenging. He is also famous for writing "The 1812 Overture" (officially named "The Year 1812, Solemn Overture, Op. 49"), which featured cannons to celebrate Russia's victory over Napoleon's army in the winter of 1812.
5. Who invented Symphonic Poems (also known as Tone Poems)?

Answer: Liszt

Franz Liszt was a generous benefactor to many Romantic composers, including Clara and Robert Schumann. His music is notoriously difficult to play.
6. Which composer wrote "Symphonie Fantastique"?

Answer: Berlioz

While it is a beautiful piece of music, it is the imagining of the composer trying to kill himself over his unrequited love of actress Harriet Smithson. He later met and married her, but when she discovered the story behind this piece of music, she was disturbed and left him.
7. Who wrote the piano suite "Pictures at an Exhibition"?

Answer: Mussorgsky

When his friend Viktor Hartmann passed away, the Imperial Academy of Arts put on an exhibition of his artwork. Mussorgsky wrote this piece as if you were traveling through the exhibition and looking at the pieces of art.
8. Which composer was born in Poland but spent most of his career in France?

Answer: Chopin

Chopin was on tour in another country when Poland was invaded. For his safety, he could not travel back to his native land during the occupation. He missed Poland dearly, and his body was moved to be buried there once it was safe to do so.
9. Which composer was mentored by the Schumanns and wrote what is arguably the world's most famous lullaby?

Answer: Brahms

Brahms was forever grateful to the Schumann family and helped take care of the household after Robert's death. He is considered one of the "3 Bs" of music (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms) as one of the greatest composers of all time.
10. Who invented the "leitmotif" for his operas?

Answer: Wagner

Wagner had specific melodies associated with specific characters, locations, and themes in his operas called "leitmotifs". They can easily be found in his series of operas called "The Ring Cycle".
