Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the time of their promotion, this Elmo was the youngest ever Rear Admiral (in the U.S. Navy).

Answer: Elmo R. "Bud" Zumwalt, Jr

Admiral Zumwalt served in World War II, Vietnam, and on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Time magazine hailed Admiral Zumwalt as "the Navy's most popular leader since World War II." In 1998 Admiral Zumwalt was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his service to the United States in war and peace.
2. A weather phenomenon that occurs during thunderstorms is named after this Elmo.

Answer: Erasmus of Formia (Saint Elmo)

Saint Elmo's Fire (or corona discharge) involves a gap in electrical charge and is sometimes confused with lightning. It can manifest across the sky but also appear as a faint 'glow' around tall, thin constructions that extend into the sky e.g. chimneys, church spires. Sailors may also observe this phenomenon on the mast of their ship whilst sailing through a thunderstorm, perhaps giving Christians on board comfort that their patron saint is granting them his protection.

Erasmus was reported to have been a bishop of Formia in Italy and was martyred in 303. He's been come to be known as St. Elmo over time, likely due to a mispronunciation of Ermo (an abbreviation of Erasmus).
3. This Elmo was the original king (or president?) of the jungle, starring in "Tarzan of the Apes" in 1918.

Answer: Elmo Lincoln

Lincoln was not originally cast to play the titular character in "Tarzan of the Apes" but after the original actor, Stellan Windrow was called into active military service, Lincoln was chosen as his replacement. Although the film made him a star, it and its two sequels ("The Romance of Tarzan" in 1918, and "The Adventures of Tarzan" in 1921) were Lincoln's only notable leading film roles. Lincoln died from a heart attack in 1952.
4. This Elmo inspired Sean Penn's murderous character in the 1995 film "Dead Man Walking".

Answer: Elmo Patrick Sonnier

Elmo Patrick Sonnier and his younger brother Eddie James Sonnier were convicted of the 1977 kidnap, rape and murder of teenaged couple Loretta Ann Bourque and David LeBlanc. Although both were originally sentenced to death, through the appeals process Eddie's sentence was changed to life without parole. Elmo however was eventually executed by electrocution in 1984.

Whilst on 'death row', Elmo was counselled by Sister Helen Prejean and she later wrote a book titled "Dead Man Walking" about her experience working with death row inmates. This book was made into the 1995 film starring Susan Sarandon as Sister Helen and Sean Penn playing Matthew Poncelet - an amalgamation of Elmo Patrick Sonnier and another inmate named Robert Lee Willie.
5. This Elmo is a singer, banjo player, and veterinarian and is best known for the Christmas novelty song "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer".

Answer: 'Dr. Elmo' Shropshire

Elmo Shropshire was born in 1936 and after many years of study graduated in 1964 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (hence his stage name 'Dr Elmo'). He worked as a horse racetrack veterinarian for a few years and after moving to California, developed an interest in bluegrass music and learned how to play the banjo.

This all led to him eventually recording "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" which he released under the brand 'Elmo & Patsy' (the latter referring to his then-wife, Patsy Trigg).
6. Born in Italy, this opera singer's signature role was as Azucena in "Il Trovatore" ("The Troubadour").

Answer: Cloe Elmo

Cloe Elmo was born in 1910 and died in 1962. She was a mezzo-soprano and also had parts in the operas "Carmen", "Falstaff" and "Tristan and Isolde". After retiring from the stage, Elmo turned to teaching and continued in this profession until her death.
7. This American cartoonist provided syndicated weekly features for the New York Evening Graphic during the 1930s and 1940s, including "The Fizzle Family", "Facts You Never Knew", and "Useless Eustace".

Answer: Horace T. Elmo

"The Fizzle Family" was drawn by Elmo himself although he had more success in syndication of others' creations. "Useless Eustace" is credited to Jack Greenall, whereas "Facts You Never Knew" has the byline 'By Bob Dart'.
8. This Elmo is an American rapper who has released music since 2012, most often under the moniker 'Bones'.

Answer: Elmo O'Connor

Other aliases O'Connor has released music under include 'Ricky A Go Go', 'Th@ Kid', 'surrenderdorothy' and 'OREGONTRAIL' with the latter two being collaborations with another artist named GREAF. O'Connor has said that he was inspired by wrestling superstar 'The Undertaker' when deciding to take on the artistic name 'Bones' because he wanted to create a persona that was dark, seedy, and like someone you wouldn't want to meet in an alleyway at night.
9. No relation to Bob, this Elmo made a living as an American jazz pianist during the 1940-1960s.

Answer: Elmo Hope

Elmo Hope was born in New York in 1923 amidst the period known as the 'Harlem Renaissance'. During his teenage years, he was close friends with two other jazz artists who would achieve much greater fame than Hope: Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell. This may have been due in part due to Hope's drug addiction which resulted in him losing his licence to play in New York clubs and ultimately contributed to his premature death in 1967, aged 43.
10. This Elmo represented their country in cricket as part of the Sri Lanka Board President's XI.

Answer: Elmo Rodrigopulle

Although Rodrigopulle represented his country on the cricket pitch, history will probably better remember him as a sports journalist since he spent 52 years writing a weekly sports column for the Daily News and becoming the newspaper's sports editor. Rodrigopulle passed away on July 20 2021 aged 80.
