Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The Mughal Empire was established by Babur in 1526. Babur was a descendent of Timur, the founder of the Central Asian Timurid dynasty in the 14th century. Having lost power in his home of modern day Turkistan, Babur instead decided to establish his kingdom towards the east, arriving in India through Afghanistan.
The Mughal Empire grew in strength and expanse under his successors, from his grandson Akbar following on until Aurangzeb. Under Aurangzeb, the Mughal Empire spanned most of the Indian subcontinent.
The dynasty is responsible for many architectural marvels within the region including the world famous Taj Mahal built by Shah Jahan in Agra, India, the Badshahi Mosque of Lahore, Pakistan that was commissioned by Aurangzeb and Humayun's Tomb in Delhi, India that was commissioned by Humayun's widow, Bega Begum.
The decline of the empire began soon after Aurangzeb's death. From then on, the Marathas of western India rose to become the dominant power before the entire region ultimately fell under the control of the British, first under the East India Company and then directly under the British monarch. During the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the revolutionaries propped up Bahadur Shah II Zafar, as their leader. He was only a titular head and once the revolution was crushed, Zafar was exiled to Burma (now Myanmar). He was the last of the Mughal Emperors. However, this was in name only as he had almost no power compared to his ancestors who had managed to successfully conquer the region.
