Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the first chapter of Esther, what was the name of the queen who was deposed by the king known as Xerxes in the NIV Bible? (In the NKJV, he's known as Ahasuerus)

Answer: Vashti

Queen Vashti was deposed after she refused to obey a request of King Xerxes. In Esther 1:10, it states the king asked Queen Vashti to wear her royal crown and come before him to "display her beauty" to the people and the nobles. Esther 1:12, in the NIV Bible, states: "But when the attendants delivered the king's command, Queen Vashti refused to come.

Then the king became furious and burned with anger." It was the end for her and a new beginning for Esther who would become queen.
2. Esther 9:9 makes reference to a man named Vaizatha. Who was he?

Answer: A son of Haman

Vaizatha was one of ten sons of Haman. The sons and Haman were all executed, as per the ninth chapter of Esther. Haman, of course, had a diabolical scheme to exterminate all the Jews in the vast ruled by the man known as Xerxes in the NIV Bible. He was thwarted in his plans by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai. According to Esther 9:7-9, the names of Haman's other sons were Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha, Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha, Parmashta, Arisai and Aridai.
3. According to New Testament Scripture, John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for Christ. How is John the Baptist described in Matthew 3:3, Mark 1:3, Luke 3:4 and John 1:23 in the NIV Bible?

Answer: Voice of one calling in the wilderness

Many Christians regard John the Baptist as the last of the Old Testament prophets because he told the people to prepare for the arrival of the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world", as per John 12:29. In the NKJV Bible, in Mark 1:1-5, John is introduced this way: "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the Prophets: 'Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You. The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight'. John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins."
4. According to John 15:5, what word does Jesus use to describe Himself?

Answer: Vine

In John 15:5, Jesus uses the word 'vine' to describe Himself. The verse, in the NKJV Bible, states: "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." The first verse of the chapter also begins with this statement from Jesus: "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser." Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the word 'true' in the first verse is emphatic. And notes in the NIV Study Bible state 'the vine' is frequently used in the Old Testament as a symbol of Israel, eg. Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7 and Jeremiah 2:21.
5. V is for Vision. The following verse, containing the word 'vision', is from the NIV Bible: "For you this whole vision is nothing but words sealed in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say, 'Read this, please,' they will answer, 'I can't; it is sealed'." What book in the Bible do you find this passage?

Answer: Isaiah

The correct answer is Isaiah, but I suspect a number of quiz players will list Revelation as their pick. The passage in question is from Isaiah 29:11. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible suggest the passage is in reference to religious leaders who found Isaiah's prophecies 'sealed' due to their own spiritual blindness. Meanwhile, the fifth chapter of Revelation is about the Lamb being "worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation."
6. V is for Veil. Who is the first woman mentioned in Scripture to wear a veil?

Answer: Rebekah

The first mention of a woman wearing a veil in Scripture is Rebekah. Genesis 24:64-65, in the NIV Bible, states: "Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel and asked the servant, 'Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?' 'He is my master,' the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself."
7. V is for Virtue. The following verse contains the word 'virtue' and is from the NIV Bible: "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy -- meditate on these things." In what book in the Bible do you find this famous passage?

Answer: Philippians

The passage is from Philippians 4:8. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is credited with writing the book of Philippians. It was addressed to members of the early church in Philippi. Among the believers in the church was Lydia and her household and the Philippi jailer and his household. Their conversions to Christianity are reported in Acts 16:11-34.
8. V is for Vanity. The following verse, containing the word 'vanity', is from Ecclesiastes 1:14 is from the NKJV Bible: "I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind." Although there is no smoking gun, who is GENERALLY PERCEIVED as being the writer of Ecclesiastes?

Answer: Solomon

Solomon is generally perceived as the writer of Ecclesiastes. However, some people strongly contest this view. While there is no conclusive proof Solomon wrote the book, the author states he is the son of David, king of Israel, in the first verse of the first chapter. In verse 16, the writer goes on to state he attained more wisdom "than all who were before me in Jerusalem."
9. V is for Vow. Acts 18:18 tells of a man sailing for Syria with Priscilla and Aquila, but before he departed he had his hair cut off at Cenchreae because of a vow he had taken. What is the name of the man who made the vow?

Answer: Paul

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible sums up things this way: "Paul had his hair cut off as part of a Nazrite vow he had made (see Numbers 6). Such a vow had to be fulfilled in Jerusalem, where the hair would be presented to God. Vows were made in either gratitude for God's blessing (like Paul's safekeeping in Corinth) or as part of a petition for future blessing.

The vow involved abstinence from drinking wine and a commitment not to cut one's hair for a period of time. At the end of this set period, the hair was cut and then burned along with other sacrifices as a symbol of offering oneself to God. Paul redirected his entire travel schedule because he wanted to get to Jerusalem in time to make this vow."
10. V is for Verdict. The following verse, containing the word 'verdict', is from the NIV Bible: "This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil." In what Gospel do you find this passage?

Answer: John

The passage is from John 3:19 and is in obvious reference to Jesus Christ. The statement comes on the heels of John 3:16, one of the most famous passages in the eyes of many evangelical Christians. That passage states: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
