Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected to the Papacy in 2013 under unusual circumstances, though not of his doing. His predecessor made the decision to resign, an act which hadn't occurred in nearly 600 years. Who was it?

Answer: Benedict XVI

Benedict resigned due to age without any external pressure. The last pope to resign was Gregory XII, though he resigned in 1415 due to external pressure. The last pope to resign without external pressure was Celestine V in 1294.

After Benedict resigned, he gained the title "Pope Emeritus".
2. In his early life, Francis worked many secular jobs including as a janitor, a chemical technician, and even as a bouncer for a bar before ultimately joining what Catholic group?

Answer: Society of Jesus (Jesuits)

Interestingly, Francis once considered leaving the seminary after he took a liking to a young woman in his youth. However, he continued his studies and joined the Jesuits; he is the first pope to have been a member of the order.
3. While he lived in Argentina in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Francis precariously balanced his ministry's interests with the corrupt Argentine government, causing some controversy. What type of government was in power at the time?

Answer: Military junta

Known as the "Proceso de Reorganización Nacional", or the National Reorganization Process, Argentina was in a state of military dictatorship while Francis was the leader of the Argentine Jesuits. He has been accused of being complicit with the military junta and allowing the kidnappings of religious men to occur under his watch. Two Jesuit priests, Orlando Yorio and Francisco Jalics, were said to have had their Church protection revoked under Francis' watch.

Many others have disputed these claims, stating that contradicting the junta was sure to have led to his death, and that Francis helped many people in secret.
4. Francis was said to have helped many people privately during the "Dirty War" in Argentina. In an interview with the Argentinian newspaper "Perfil", what did Francis say he had given one man who was trying to enter Brazil to escape his imminent imprisonment and death?

Answer: Francis' own personal identification documents

Francis also gave the unknown man a priest's robe so that the disguise would work properly and the man could escape to Brazil. Francis was also said to have helped and hidden numerous others during the "Dirty War", which led to thousands of disappearances and deaths of Argentina's people.
5. Francis was sitting next to his friend, the Brazilian cardinal Claudio Hummes, when it was finally apparent that he had been elected the next pope. After embracing him, what did Cardinal Hummes suggest he should not forget?

Answer: The poor

"Don't forget the poor," Cardinal Hummes whispered into Francis' ear before he was inaugurated. Francis took the advice to heart, and began a new papacy focused on the downtrodden. There was little doubt in Cardinal Hummes' mind that the cardinals had chosen the right man at the right time.
6. Francis had been chosen by the cardinals to lead the Roman Catholic Church. The only boundary left toward becoming Pope was spiritual. Before he took his place on the balcony to announce his ascension to the position, Francis sat alone in a room to decide whether or not he wanted to accept. He said he was anxious at first, but was then filled with a bright light and overcome with a certain calmness. He then knew he had a calling to be Pope. That calling also helped him choose the name of what saint?

Answer: Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi was born into a wealthy merchant lifestyle, but soon grew disillusioned by the world around him. After becoming a war prisoner in Collestrada and a later illness, he became the founder of the Franciscan order.

Francis of Assisi led a life of poverty, barefoot and dressed only in shoddy clothing. Pope Francis felt this would be a good role model for the modern Church.
7. "How I would love a Church that is poor and for the poor," Francis said in an interview, explaining why he chose his papal name. Which of the following acts was NOT something Francis has done to demonstrate his belief in this idea?

Answer: Purchased expensive tapestries for the Curia

Francis has made several small personal gestures including switching expensive decorations for modest ones, wearing modest white robes, and choosing not to purchase expensive amenities that previous popes had been accustomed to. The People's Pope wanted to set an example for all Catholics to live by.
8. In an interview with the Jesuit magazine "America" shortly after he became Pope, what did Francis say when he was asked to give a description of himself as an introduction to the world?

Answer: I am a sinner.

Showing his modesty and an admission of Christian guilt, Francis told the world in those few words that he believed not even the Bishop of Rome was above God's judgment. To many, it was a testament to how far removed the papacy and other aspects of the Catholic hierarchy had become from the common people. An admission of sin is an admission that one is human just like everyone else.
9. In Francis' first papal exhortation titled "Joy of the Gospel", many commentators were upset that he was attacking capitalism, with some calling the exhortation "pure Marxism". What economic idea, verbatim, did Francis actually criticize in the exhortation?

Answer: trickle-down theories

While trickle-down theories can certainly be a part of capitalism, they don't completely define the idea. Francis was, more-or-less, criticizing one aspect of capitalism that he found immoral. Here are his words, which I find to be quite poignant:

"In this context, some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system. Meanwhile, the excluded are still waiting."
10. In March of 2014, a German bishop named Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, also known as the "Bishop of Bling", was removed from his diocese by Francis for what offense?

Answer: He was building a $43 million (U.S.) residential complex for himself.

As a sign that reform was to come to the Church, Francis expelled the man from his post to conduct an investigation. The bishop had wasted millions of dollars on a personal pet project, and parishioners were unhappy with the way he was allocating the Church's funds.

It seems best that a church newly focused on issues of the poor should not put up with such greedy behavior.
