Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After being stung by a jellyfish, which sour household product may help to reduce the venom's effect?

Answer: vinegar

When a jellyfish tentacle attaches to the skin, it pumps nematocysts into the skin which inject venom. Applying vinegar neutralizes any undischarged nematocysts and reduces the release of any more venom. Some beaches in Australia have vinegar available for use where jellyfish are known to exist.

2. Where would you find the semicircular canals?

Answer: human ears

Each ear has a set of 3 semicircular canals, each oriented in 3 different directions. As the head moves small hairs called cilia are stimulated by fluid inside the canals, which is then detected as motion in the brain.

4. Which of the following tumors affects the eye?

Answer: Retinoblastoma

Retinoblastoma affects the retina. It usually presents in childhood. It occurs in both eyes, commonly. It has four stages. The first stage is an asymptomatic stage following which comes the glaucomatous stage. Then the tumor extends into the orbit. The final stage is distant metastasis. Prognosis in the last stage is not good and only palliative care is given. Removal of the eyeball can be carried out if the disease is detected early enough.

5. People have been extracting oil from which sort of rock since the tenth century?

Answer: Shale

The Arabic physician, Masawaih al-Mardini (Mesue the Younger), described a way of extracting mineral oil from 'some kind of bituminous shale' as far back as the 10th century. It was also used in Switzerland and Austria from the 14th century, and many other countries granted patents and exploited shale, particularly when the Industrial Revolution made increasing demands for light, and whale oil became increasingly expensive and scarce.

The discovery of crude oil in the mid part of the twentieth century in the Middle East halted most of these industries (except for China and Estonia) until the recent, controversial renewed interest across the world. Far from being a new source of energy, oil from shale was one of the first mineral oils used by humans.

7. What are those huge masses that break off from the Earth's mantle and float around the mantle called?

Answer: Tectonic plates

Over time, the Earth's crust breaks up into pieces called tectonic plates, and these plates float around on the mantle. In between these tectonic plates are gigantic cracks that we call faults. Most earthquakes occur near or right over these faults. The San Andreas fault in California is a well-known fault.

Earthenware plates are actually dinner plates, similar to stoneware plates. Condylar buttress plates are used in the medical profession to treat fractures of the femur. Lithographic plates are used in printing, to colour images to paper.

8. Which branch of science deals with electricity, heat and magnetism?

9. Aconite is a low growing perennial of the Ranunculaceae family found in Europe and the United States. All parts of the plant are extremely toxic. What is the common name for this plant?

Answer: monkshood

The poison, an alkaloid called aconitine, paralyzes the nerves, lowers the blood pressure, and eventually stops the heart. It is so powerful that Nazi scientists used it as an ingredient for poisoned bullets.

Question by player prana
10. An active ingredient list on an empty container says "62% ethyl alcohol", and other ingredients are not listed. What product was originally in the container?

Answer: Hand sanitizer

If you check the back of any hand sanitizer bottle, you will probably see the message saying "62% ethyl alcohol". A few types of hand sanitizer will have a higher number than 62%. The main ingredient in bleach is often sodium hypochlorite, although other types exist. Gasoline and beer both have a mixture of ingredients. Beer needs to have all ingredients listed because it is intended to be consumed.

This is unlike hand sanitizer, which only lists active ingredients similarly to most medicines.
