Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Smoking is NOT associated with a higher risk of developing which of the following diseases?

Answer: Parkinson's disease

Several studies have shown that smokers have a 44% to 50% lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease than nonsmokers. The reasons are not clear. That said, no one would suggest that the benefits of smoking outweigh the risks.

2. If a company describes its operations or processes as being "carbon neutral", what claim is it trying to make?

Answer: It has net zero carbon emissions.

Carbon neutrality, or climate neutrality, refers to the practice of countering the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that a company emits by engaging or investing in other activities that lower the amount of such gases in the atmosphere. Examples of companies that have pledged to remain carbon neutral include Yahoo, Google, Dell and HSBC.

These good corporate citizens are doing their part to reduce or eliminate the "carbon footprint" they leave behind on the world.

4. The tensile strength of a material (such as a metal alloy or even spider's silk) is measured by subjecting it to which of the following?

Answer: Stretching it

The tensile strength of a material is the maximum amount of force it can withstand from being stretched before it breaks. This strength can actually vary wildly from other strengths, such as compressive, which measures how much a material can withstand compression. Spider's silk is often used when talking about tensile strength, as it has one of the highest strengths of natural substances.

5. What do the initials "VoIP" mean in the world of telecommunications?

Answer: voice over internet protocol

VoIP is a new technology that carries voice over the internet instead of over traditional phone lines. VoIP technology is considerably less expensive, however, the voice quality is dependent upon the quality of your internet connection.

6. Pouting lips, the hallmark of the fashion model or the beauty queen, are referred to by neurologists as what kind of unflattering reflex?

Answer: Snout reflex

I bet everyone practicing a luscious full-lipped pout at the beginning of this question, now has those lips flattened out in a straight line. Alas, it's true though. Neurologists test this reflex by tapping slightly on the midline of the lips, and, if they move forward into an enticing pout, it is considered a sign of brain damage, indicating a malfunctioning frontal lobe.

The medical term for pouting lips, aka the snout reflex, is the orbicularis oris reflex.

7. In which of the following organs can you find cells known as hepatocytes?

Answer: Liver

These important specialised cells are involved in the synthesis, or production, of proteins, bile salts, cholesterol and phospholipids. The last two substances are important constituents of cell membranes.

8. How many human beings were killed when the Chicxulub impactor landed in what is now Mexico?

Answer: None

The Chicxulub impactor was a very large (10-15 kilometres in diameter) chunk of space stuff (like an asteroid or a comet) which left an impact crater over 150 kilometres wide and 20 kilometres deep. It destroyed about 75% of everything living but that did not include humans.

The rock landed between 66 and 80 million years ago. Humans' ancestors have been around for about six million years and modern humans for only about 200,000 years. Thus there weren't any human beings to be wiped out by the Chicxulub impact and its aftermath.

9. This lobe of the brain, from the Latin for "back of the head", is where visual information is received.

Answer: Occipital Lobe

This area holds the primary visual cortex, which is also called Brodmann's area 17, which is also called the V1 region.

10. Which of the following is an axiom of Euclidean geometry (a given or accepted truth)?

Answer: two parallel lines do not intersect

In Euclidean geometry, lines are defined as parallel when every point on one line is equidistant from a point on the other line and they lie in the same plane. If continued indefinitely, they will never get closer and never meet. The area of a circle equals pi (constant approximately equal to 3.14) times radius squared.

The angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees.
