Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Logotherapy is focused specifically on a search for which of these?

Answer: Meaning

One of the basic premises of logotherapy is that humans have an innate voice that is constantly searching for meaning in life.

Freud posited pleasure as man's basic motivation while Adler placed control as basic to man's motivation.
2. When did Frankl first professionally develop logotherapy?

Answer: 1920s

Frankl, born in 1905 started formulating his theory from a very young age. He had already written many articles in the 1920s and 1930s and then a full, book-length, manuscript by 1941 but that manuscript was confiscated by the Nazis upon his being taken to a concentration camp.

After he left Adler's academy in 1927, his work on logotherapy proceeded in earnest, developing methods to go along with the theory.
3. Viktor Frankl built his career after the Holocaust in Vienna, which is often considered as the birthplace of many different schools of psychology. Was he born there too?

Answer: Yes

Freud, Adler, Jung and others spent much time in Vienna developing their theories and teaching.

Frankl was born there, worked there until the Holocaust and returned there after the Holocaust.
4. The term 'Logotherapy' is taken from which ancient language?

Answer: Greek

The term 'logotherapy' is one that Frankl built from the ancient Greek.

Logos = meaning. Therapy = healing So, logotherapy would mean 'healing through meaning'. (I didn't argue with his knowledge of Ancient Greek.)
5. What is the name of the book written by Viktor Frankl which describes logotherapy and his use of it in the concentration camps?

Answer: Man's Search for Meaning

This book was originally written by him anonymously in 1947 under a different title - 'Existential Psychology in the Concentration Camps'. It is an autobiographical account of his life prior to and during his experiences as a prisoner in four different camps. He includes also a primer on logotherapy. He was later convinced by friends to publish his own name which gave the book even more prominence.

"The Choice", by Dr. Edith Eger, and "Night", by Elie Wiesel are also autobiographical accounts of the Holocaust.

"Faith After the Holocaust" was written by Eliezer Berkowitz about theological questions after the Holocaust.
6. There are a number of triads in Frankl's theories, so we will start with the three pillars of logotherapy. Which is NOT one of Frankl's pillars?

Answer: Ego structure

Frankl, who had met with Freud and had written communication with him, developed his theory which spoke much about a person's responsibility to himself and his own meaning. Ego structure was a basic part of Freud's psychoanalysis.

Freedom of will - people have the ability to choose freely and with responsibility. we are not controlled by our drives, instincts or conditioning

Unconditional meaning - everyone's life has meaning - unconditionally!

Will to meaning - we all have an inner striving to meaning. our basic motivation is NOT pleasure or power but rather wanting to find meaning in our lives.
7. Frankl described three paths to meaning. Which of the following is NOT one of Frankl's triad?

Answer: Physical

The creative path describes ways a person contributes to the world - whether through a task he fulfils, or a work he creates.

The experiential path is a way a person may receive from the world - through nature, music, art, family and any other experience which helps the person find that meaning.

The attitudinal path is when a person is met with a difficult situation which he cannot control or change, that individual is challenged with finding meaning despite being in a difficult situation.
8. The "tragic triad" is described by Frankl as three difficult situations we all face during our lives. Which of the following is NOT one of Frankl's tragic triad?

Answer: Existential vacuum

Although existential vacuum is another concept coined by Frankl, he did not consider it as one of the three tragic topics we all experience at some point. In fact, existential vacuum was not considered by Frankl as a tragedy but as a human greatness.

Suffering he defined as any pain/loss that we experience in our lives.

Guilt he defined as being responsible for actions which had a negative outcome - whether the act was intentional or not;

Mortality he described as being aware of our own inevitable death.
9. Frankl himself had many outside interests. In only one of them was he the president of the local Austrian association. Which "trekky" interest did he particularly like?

Answer: Mountain climbing

Although he loved music as well, he continued climbing mountains well into his eighties.
10. Viktor Frankl appreciated many of his peers in the realm of psychology. Yet he was a great admirer of this 'individual psychologist' and was even appointed editor of his academy's journal. Which psychologist was it?

Answer: Alfred Adler

He was very involved with Adler's individual psychology until 1927 and had written numerous articles for the journal. Due to professional differences of opinion Adler fired Frankl from his academy. This, in turn, freed Frankl to pursue his own interests and further develop logotherapy.
