Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The usage of renewable energy has been on the rise since the beginning of the 21st century. Is renewable energy totally pollution free?

Answer: No

To be called green energy, the energy generated must have minimal pollution. Renewable energy such as burning of organic material from sustainable forests can still emit CO2. Green energy does not involve mining and drilling which can damage the eco-system. The solution in the future is to find sustainable energy which is pollution free.
2. Which of these energy sources is the least affected by external factors?

Answer: Geothermal

Geothermal energy comes from the Earth's crust. Hot-water exists in the Earth's crust, about 3.2 km under the Earth's surface. The hot-water is transported under high pressure and is converted to steam above ground. The steam produced drives turbine generators to generate power.

In countries like Iceland, the steam comes directly from geysers. About 30% of Iceland's power generation come from geothermal sources.
3. Electric car batteries can run for about 320,000 km (200,000 ml). What happens to them after they are no longer usable?

Answer: Recycled

Electric car batteries are mainly lithium-ion types. After they are no longer usable in cars, the batteries still have 80 percent of charge left. These batteries can be reused at solar or wind power farms to store surplus power.
4. Silicon is one of the main materials used in solar panels. Which material is NOT one of the other three?

Answer: Gold

Copper is used for wiring of the solar panels and for certain type of cells. Silver is used on the front and back of the solar cells as it is a good conductor. Zinc oxide is used on newer photovoltaic technology to achieve a better solar-cell efficiency. Silicon is the main material for the photovoltaic cells
5. What type of energy can be generated by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon?

Answer: tidal

Tidal energy is generated from the rise and fall of tides in the sea or ocean level, due to the gravitational pull of the sun and moon. Tidal power was developed during the twentieth century. The Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station in South Korea with a power capacity of 254 MW.

When completed in 2011, it surpassed the 240 MW Rance Tidal Power Station in France, which was the world's largest for 45 years.
6. Can planes and boats run on solar power?

Answer: Yes

A Swiss pilot flew a solar powered plane, named Solar Impulse II, around the world in 2015 and 2016.

Turanor PlanetSolar, developed in Switzerland, was the first boat to travel round the world using only solar power. The boat was fitted with 8.5 tons of lithium-ion batteries and took about two days to fully charge the batteries. After being fully charged, the boat could be used for 72 hours.
7. Wind and hydro turbine generators are converting what energy into electrical power?

Answer: kinetic

Wind and hydro turbine engines are converting kinetic energy to electrical energy. Wind farms can be built on land or offshore in large bodies of water such as oceans, seas and lakes. Hydropower plants generate power from dams built across rivers. Hydropower was the earliest type of power generation plant used in history.
8. What gas is commonly used as an energy source as it is a zero-carbon fuel?

Answer: Hydrogen

Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe. Hydrogen is mixed with oxygen to produce non-carbon fuel, used in fuel cells or internal combustion engines. Hydrogen can be stored in gas or liquid form in tanks. Car makers are developing cars to be run on hydrogen and oxygen to reduce carbon emissions.
9. What type of energy uses organic matter as fuel for generating power?

Answer: biomass

Biomass is energy produced from organic matter found in living or recently living organisms, organic mass and waste.

Biomass comes from various type of sources including agricultural residues, animal waste, forestry residues, wood and industrial wastes, municipal solid wastes and sewage.
10. Biofuels convert organic matter into two types of fuels used mainly for transportation. Biodiesel is one of the two fuels. What is the other one?

Answer: Ethanol

Ethanol and biodiesel are the two most common types of biofuels used to meet transportation needs.

Ethanol is a renewable fuel which can be made from various plant materials (biomass). Ethanol is used as a blending agent with gasoline to increase octane and to reduce the emission of carbon monoxide.

Biodiesel is a renewable liquid fuel which is much cleaner than petroleum-based diesel fuel. Biodiesel is nontoxic and biodegradable, produced by a combination of vegetable oil, animal fat or used cooking oil.
