Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many times in his great career, did Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan hit four home runs in a single game?

Answer: 0

Ryan was a pitcher and had a career batting average of .135 in his 27 seasons. He played half his career in the American League which cut down on his plate appearances. Nolan hit only two home runs in his career, one in 1971 with the Mets, and the other in 1972 with the Angels.

He retired on top of the heap with 5714 strikeouts from the mound. Lou Gehrig was the first player in modern-day history to hit four home runs in one game, in 1932 with the Yankees.
2. Baseball lost an icon in 1948. Who was this that died of cancer?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Babe left baseball after his 1935 season with the Boston Braves. After losing a battle to cancer, he was buried in Hawthorne, New York, and was later joined by former wife Claire in 1976. The great Ted Williams of the Red Sox died in 2002 as did Dodger catcher John Roseboro. Santo was a third baseman for the Cubs in the 1960s. Ron died in December 2010.
3. For the first time in baseball history, a father and a son played on the same team in the same season in 1990. Who was this pair?

Answer: Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey Jr

The other combinations did not exist. Father George Kenneth Griffey Sr began his play with the Reds in 1973, and was just in time to experience the Big Red Machine of Cincinnati. He was wearing the pinstripes of the Yankees in 1982. He was later back with the Reds, but they traded him to Seattle in 1990. Junior had already been with the Mariners for one season when dad hooked up with him.

They would play together with the Mariners through the 1991 season when Ken Sr retired. Dad was an All-Star MVP and hit 152 home runs. Junior was also an All-Star MVP, was NL runner-up MVP in 1994, then won the NL MVP in 1997.

He also out-did his dad in the home run department with over 600 home runs. Tim Raines and Tim Raines Jr later duplicated this feat by both playing on the 2001 Baltimore Orioles together.
4. Who was the first baseballer to play in 3000 games?

Answer: Ty Cobb

The others were pitchers, and did not appear in even 1000 career games. Cobb played in 24 seasons, 22 with the Tigers and two with the Philadelphia Athletics. He just topped the 3000-game mark with 3034 in his career. Even the great Honus Wagner, Mel Ott, or Lou Gehrig would not reach even 2800 games.

Although Cobb remains in the books as the first, other have passed his mark throughout the years. They include Pete Rose, Carl Yastrzemski, Hank Aaron, Rickey Henderson, Stan Musial, and others.
5. Which ballpark in 2011 celebrated its 99th season in Major League Baseball?

Answer: Fenway Park

The Metrodome and Oriole Park was built in the 1980s and 1990s, and Dodger Stadium in the 1960s. The AL Boston club played their first 11 seasons at Huntington Avenue Grounds. Fenway Park opened in Boston on April 20, 1912. The Red Sox showed their appreciation to the city and fans by winning that World Series against the New York Giants. Boston's 2007 World Series title was the 10th appearance at Fenway Park. Literally, 100s of baseball greats have played in this storied ballpark.
6. Future Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux retired from baseball in 2008 with 355 career wins. Maddux is most likely baseball's final 350-game winner. Which pitcher did he surpass by one career win, who left baseball in 2007?

Answer: Roger Clemens

Maddux pitched for 23 seasons, mostly with the Braves and Cubs. Greg won four consecutive Cy Young awards in the 1990s, and was in the top five voting another five times in his career. He retired with a 355-227 record. Clemens left baseball in 2007 with a shroud of controversy due to illegal substance allegations. Roger was 354-184 in his 24 seasons.

He won an amazing seven Cy Young awards.
7. Only two teams in the 2000s decade won two World Series. One team was the New York Yankees. Which was the other team?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

The others didn't make a World Series appearance in the decade. In Boston's two appearances, they skunked their opponents both times. In 2004 it was against the Cardinals, then in 2007 against the Rockies.
8. Which manager retired after the 2010 season, while moving into the fourth spot for all-time wins as a manager?

Answer: Bobby Cox

The other managers were long retired from baseball. After four seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, then another 25 with the Atlanta Braves, Bobby just surpassed the 2500-win mark with 2504. He was also the fifth manager in history to lose 2000 games, squeaking by that mark in by two losses. Cox also set a record by being the first person in baseball history who was ejected from 150 games. Managers who won more games than Bobby are Connie Mack, John McGraw, and 2011 Cardinal manager Tony LaRussa.
9. Who were the first brothers in baseball history to play together on three different teams?

Answer: Lloyd and Paul Waner

The other combinations did not exist, and Al, Mickey, and Ted were all one-team career players. The Waners blessed the Pittsburgh Pirate outfield together from 1927-1940. They found each other again on the 1941 Boston Braves, then the 1944 Brooklyn Dodgers. Both Waners were later inducted into the Hall of Fame.
10. Ironically, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Rafael Palmeiro all wore the number 25 in their careers, and all left baseball under suspicions of illegal substance use. Which of the following never wore the number 8 in their career?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Berra was a Yankee, Ripken an Oriole, and Stargell a Pirate. With the number 8 being an odd number for a pitcher, Koufax wore the number 32 with the Dodgers. He was a dominant pitcher as a Dodger in the 1960s, winning numerous MVP, Cy Young, and other major awards. He retired in 1966.
