3. Golf can have what seems to outsiders as its own language. We often hear terms such as 'par', 'birdie', and 'bogey'. What is a 'scratch golfer'?

Answer: One with a handicap of zero

In amateur golf, handicaps indicate a player's ability. A scratch golfer 'plays off zero', while a less proficient golfer would have a handicap of up to 28 (in the UK, other regions can vary). Professional golfers do not have handicaps, they play off zero. If you fancy becoming a pro, you will need to play off scratch, or better still, have a negative handicap (-1, -2 and so on).
