Mercer University was founded in the city of Mercer in 1833. The Bears nickname dates back to 1892 when their gridiron players sported long hair and moustaches. Mercer joined the NCAA Southern Conference in 2014. Their gridiron squad were involved in the first college football game ever held in Georgia, when they played the University of Georgia in 1892.

However, the sport was discontinued in 1941 and not reinstated until 2013.

Kennesaw State University was established in Cobb County in 1966. The Owls nickname, symbolising wisdom, is a common one in US college sports. The school was an NAIA member for many years before moving to the NCAA in 1995. In 2024, they joined Conference USA. They won a number of national titles at NCAA Division II level, including men's basketball in 2004.

Georgia Institute of Technology, usually referred to as Georgia Tech, was established in Atlanta in 1895. The school's official nickname is Yellow Jackets (another name for wasps), although they are also unofficially referred to as "the Ramblin' Wreck". Tech joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1979.

Their gridiron squad were voted as national champions in 1917, 1928 and 1990, and set a record that's unlikely to be overtaken - the most lopsided win in college football history, beating Cumberland College 222-0 in 1916.

Georgia State University was established in Atlanta in 1913. The Panthers nickname, like most wild cat ones, is a common one across the USA. The school has had a number of conference affiliations over the years - they joined the Sun Belt Conference for the second time in 2013, having previously been a member between 1976 and 1981.
