Mercer University was founded in the city of Mercer in 1833. The Bears nickname dates back to 1892 when their gridiron players sported long hair and moustaches. Mercer joined the NCAA Southern Conference in 2014. Their gridiron squad were involved in the first college football game ever held in Georgia, when they played the University of Georgia in 1892.

However, the sport was discontinued in 1941 and not reinstated until 2013.
