Collins has played for several teams in the NFL, including Super Bowl XXXV with the New York Giants. He has received a significant amount of negative media attention due to his battle with alcoholism and racial insensitivity, but has also been noted as one of the most charitable players of the NFL, donating money to various organizations since he began his career in 1995.

After playing two years on offense and defense with the San Francisco City College football team, he earned a scholarship to USC where he led the nation in rushing in 1968.
