1. Coral Gables, Florida

While many think that the University of Miami is located in Miami, Florida, it's actually in Coral Gables seven miles southwest. The Atlantic Coast Conference school chose the Hurricanes nicknames for their sports teams in 1927. Many cite a 1926 Atlantic hurricane for the school's choice of the nickname.
2. Madison, Wisconsin

The University of Wisconsin is in Madison, the state capital of Wisconsin. The school chose the nickname, Badgers, in 1889. The name choice was a tribute to the lead miners who settled in Wisconsin in the 1830s. The miners would burrow like badgers into hillsides to keep warm during the frigid Wisconsin winters.
3. Seattle, Washington

The original nickname for the University of Washington was the "sun dodgers" in reference to the Seattle weather. In 1922, the school chose the husky dog to represent the large state school in Washington. The school's football team even plays at Husky Stadium. Seattle has been the most populated city in the Northwestern state.
4. New Haven, Connecticut

Yale University is a prestigious Ivy League college located in New Haven, Connecticut. The school chose the Bulldogs for the team nickname in 1892. A former alumni named Andrew Graves bought a bulldog for five dollars and named him the unofficial team mascot in 1889. Three years later, Yale adopted the Bulldogs as their school's official mascot nickname.
5. Houston, Texas

The Houston Cougars got their name when a new coach, John Bender, started the first volunteer football team in 1927. The team needed a nickname and he chose "Cougars" since it was his previous team's nickname in Washington. The school is located in Houston, the most populated city in Texas and fourth largest in the United States.
6. College Park, Maryland

College Park, Maryland has been the home for the University of Maryland since 1856. The school is close to Washington DC, Baltimore, and the Naval Academy. The school chose the nickname "Terrapins" because a diamondback terrapin (turtle) is Maryland's state reptile.
7. Minneapolis, Minnesota

The University of Minnesota is a Big Ten University that is actually located in both of Twin Cities in Minnesota. The main campus and the school's address is in Minneapolis but the large campus also flows into the state capital of St. Paul. The team chose the nickname "Golden Gophers" in part because of the state nickname is the "Gopher State".

Then a sports announced added the "golden" part due to the color of the team's jerseys.
8. Berkeley, California

California is home to many large state universities. The founding campus of the University of California system was the school in Berkeley. It became the state's first land-grant university. The school chose the nickname "Golden Bears" in part because California's state animal is the Grizzly bear.

The track team in 1895 carried a flag with the bear being golden in color and the name stuck.
9. Tempe, Arizona

The Arizona State University sports teams had been called Owls and then, Bears, prior to choosing the "Sun Devils" in 1946. The Tempe based school wanted a name to represent their hot Southwestern environment. In 2024, Arizona State joined the Big 12 Conference after previously being a member of Pac-10 Conference.
10. Columbia, South Carolina

The South Carolina Gamecocks did not directly chose their nickname after the bird pictured. The Southeastern Conference university dedicated their school's nickname to General Thomas Sumter. The Revolutionary War general was known as a "Fighting Gamecock" with the tenacity of the noble bird.

The school is located in the state's capital city and located halfway between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.
