Louisiana State University, which is usually referred to by its initials of LSU, was founded in the state capital, Baton Rouge, in 1853. Tigers is a common nickname of colleges in the USA, and LSU even call their gridiron arena Tiger Stadium. They are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and have won national championships in a number of sports, including baseball, gridiron and women's basketball.

Nicholls State University was founded in 1948 in Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish. The Cnlonels nickname was chosen because the college was once dominated by the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). The Colonels joined the NCAA Division I Southland Conference in 1991.

Tulane University was founded in New Orleans in 1834 under its original name of Medical College of Louisiana. The Green Wave nickname was adopted in 1920 after a song called "The Rolling Green Wave" was published in the school newspaper. In 2014, they joined the American Athletic Conference. Their first national title came in men's tennis in 1959.
