The Melbourne Cup started in 1860 and has been held annually since.

There is a maximum of 24 in a field, but 2 were scratched (Yellowstone and Zarita). Yellowstone was scratched because of a hip injury while Zarita carried a virus. Both were scratched the day before the big race.

The race used to be longer (2 miles) but in 1972 it was changed into 3200m when Australia changed from imperial to the metric system.
