Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Charles Barkley
Answer: 0 Championships
Despite being lauded as one of the most dominant forwards to ever play the game and winning MVP over Michael Jordan in 1993, "Chuck" was never able to reach the mountaintop in his storied NBA career and retired in 2000 without ever winning a championship after 16 seasons in the league.
2. Vince Carter
Answer: 0 Championships
The 8-time NBA all star is regarded as one of the greatest dunkers in the history of the game. Despite playing in the league for a then-record 22 seasons when he retired in 2020, he was never able to win a championship with any of the 8 different teams he played for.
3. Tracy McGrady
Answer: 0 Championships
Vince Carter's cousin was an excellent player in his own right, McGrady retired without a championship in 2013 after 16 grueling seasons in the NBA. He made 7 all-star teams and won two individual scoring championships.
4. Allen Iverson
Answer: 0 Championships
When the "Answer" won the NBA MVP Award in 2001, he was the shortest player in history to do so. Standing at 6'0 tall, the shooting guard / point guard hybrid played 14 years in the NBA, making 11 all-star teams but was unable to get over the championship hump, and retired without a trophy in 2010 before a brief playing stint in Turkey.
5. Steve Nash
Answer: 0 Championships
The Canadian is widely regarded as one of the best passers in the history of the game, winning the NBA assists title 5 times in his 19 seasons as an NBA professional. Nash was also a prolific shooter, a member of the coveted "50-40-90" club (Shooting 50% from the field, 40% from 3-point range, and 90% from the free throw line in a season).
Despite these impressive accolades, and his two NBA MVP awards, Nash was never part of a championship team.
6. Dirk Nowitzki
Answer: 1-3 Championships
Dirk Nowitzki won the NBA MVP in 2007 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, but his greatest achievement was undoubtedly beating a Lebron James-led Miami Heat team in 2011 to claim his first and only championship. The German would also take home the Finals MVP for his impressive performance in the series.
7. Dwayne Wade
Answer: 1-3 Championships
The 6'4 guard from Marquette took the NBA by storm when he won a Finals MVP in his third season with the Miami Heat, defeating the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 finals. Wade would then team up with fellow 2003 draft prospects LeBron James and Chris Bosh when they joined the Miami Heat in the summer of 2010.
The "Big Three" would win two championships (2012, 2013), taking Wade's total tally to three rings.
8. Chauncey Billups
Answer: 1-3 Championships
The 5x NBA all-star undoubtedly achieved the greatest feat of his professional career when he led the Detroit Pistons to a championship against the favored Los Angeles Lakers in 2004. Billups was the best player on the winning team, getting awarded the Finals MVP for his performance in the series. He would retire without another championship in 2014.
9. Larry Bird
Answer: 1-3 Championships
The Indiana native was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1979; the decision would prove fruitful as Bird contributed to three total championships with the team (1981, 1984, 1986), taking home the Finals MVP in the latter two. "Larry Legend" also won three consecutive league MVP awards (1984-1986) while with the team.
10. Wilt Chamberlain
Answer: 1-3 Championships
Regarded as one of the most physically dominant and talented players in the history of the league, the 7'1 center is perhaps best known for his 100 point game against the New York Knicks in 1962. Wilt Chamberlain is also, more importantly, a 2-time NBA Champion (1967, 1972), winning the Finals MVP in 1972.
11. Michael Jordan
Answer: 4+ Championships
It is difficult to overstate the aura that surrounded a hungry Michael Jordan in an NBA Finals. Despite struggling to reach the Finals early in his career, the widely regarded greatest scorer in the history of basketball won six out of his six finals appearances, including two 3-peats (a portmanteau of "three" and "repeat", implying 3-in-a-row).
Jordan dominated the 90s so thoroughly that a lot of NBA analysts believe that his Chicago Bulls team could have won eight championships in a row had he not retired after his 3rd ring to pursue professional baseball. Due to team turmoil, Jordan would retire again in 1998 following the dismissal of his head coach, Phil Jackson. His third professional basketball stint was largely uneventful, but little can be done to taint his impressive 6-0 finals records and his six Finals MVPs.
12. LeBron James
Answer: 4+ Championships
Signing a multi-million dollar shoe deal as a high schooler would have been too much pressure for many. The expectations on LeBron James as a teenager were so unrealistically high that many analysts at the time claimed he was being set up to fail. The Akron native somehow exceeded even his most ardent supporters' expectations as he made 8 consecutive finals from 2011-2018 and won four NBA championships with 3 different teams, winning the NBA MVP as the strongest contributor in each of his rings. James entered his age-39 season in 2023 as the player with the most regular season points in NBA history.
13. Stephen Curry
Answer: 4+ Championships
Steph Curry single-handedly changed the game of basketball entering the 2010s; his ability to create space both on and off the ball and shoot 3 pointers accurately make him the most influential player of his generation. As a leader of one of the best teams in NBA history, the Golden State Warriors, one of the greatest shooters in the game won the Finals MVP and his 4th NBA championship in 2022.
14. Bill Russell
Answer: 4+ Championships
"The game of basketball was different back then; it was easier to win"
Russell's critics are not entirely wrong, as the big man did not have to contend with as many teams during the infancy of the NBA. However, his dominance was unparalleled and he was undoubtedly the greatest winner of his era, with more rings than fingers. Russell won 11 NBA championships between 1957 and 1969. The legendary center passed away on July 31, 2022 at 88 years old. The NBA world owes William Felton Russell a great debt for his contribution towards expanding the game in the United States.
15. Kobe Bryant
Answer: 4+ Championships
Kobe spent his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning 5 championships and 2 Finals MVPs to go along with his sole regular season MVP. He gave himself the nickname "the Black Mamba" as he considered himself a "lethal basketball assassin". His killer instinct, short memory, intelligence, charisma, and work ethic earned him the respect of the entire NBA world and he is widely considered one of the greatest players to ever play the game. Kobe did not always win, but his ability to take over a game was always reminiscent of his childhood idol, Michael Jordan.
Bryant died tragically in 2020 in a helicopter crash, and he was posthumously inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame shortly after.
