Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Al Simmons was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953. He played with six clubs in his 20 year career. Which team did he not play for?

Answer: St. Louis Browns

"Bucketfoot" Al Simmons also played for the Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators and Cincinnati Reds in his career. Simmons was a three time All-Star and twice led the league in batting average. Simmons' best year was 1930 when he hit .381 with 211 hits. He also had 165 RBI's and 36 HR's.
2. Dave Winfield enjoyed a Hall of Fame career spanning 22 seasons. Which of the teams listed did he never play for?

Answer: New York Mets

Dave Winfield started his career with the San Diego Padres where he played for eight seasons. He then played nine seasons with the New York Yankees. He ended his career playing 46 games with the Cleveland Indians. Winfield was the oldest player playing baseball in 1995, the year he retired, at 43 years old. Dave Winfield was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the 2001 class.
3. Lynn Nolan Ryan is best known for his blazing fastball and high strikeout totals. For which of these teams did he never play?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

The "Ryan Express" threw seven no-hitters and amassed 5,714 strike outs. Ryan led the league in strike outs 11 times. In an incredible 27 year career, Ryan played for the teams mentioned and the California Angels. Ryan was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.
4. Gaylord Perry had quite the career, playing with eight major league teams. Which team did the Hall of Fame pitcher never play for?

Answer: Milwaukee Brewers

In addition to the teams listed, Perry also pitched for the Giants, Indians, Rangers, Yankees and Royals. Perry had a 314-265 record over his 22 year career. Gaylord Perry won the Cy Young award in both leagues. His first, in 1972, was with the Cleveland Indians where he had a 24-16 record.

His second was with the San Diego Padres, in 1978, where he posted a 21-6 record. Gaylord was a five time All-Star.
5. Ralph Kiner had a great career, playing for three teams over his ten year career. Which of the following teams did he not play for?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

Ralph Kiner was an incredible power hitter who led, or was tied for, the lead in home runs each of his first seven years in big league baseball. His home run per at-bat ratio, a great statistic for measuring how well you rank as a home run hitter, trails only Babe Ruth and Mark McGwire. Kiner's career was cut short due to a debilitating back ailment.

Some baseball historians estimate that Kiner could have been the home run king if he had played a 21 year career. Kiner averaged 37 home runs over his ten year career. Multiply that by 21 seasons and you get 777 homers. Who knows where he would have ended up on the career homer list had he played the game longer?
6. Phil Niekro has more wins past the age of 40 than any pitcher ever. Which team did he never play for?

Answer: Minnesota Twins

Niekro had a great career playing for these teams, as well as the Braves while they were in Milwaukee and the Toronto Blue Jays. Niekro played 318-274 record over his illustrious 24 year career. Niekro seemed to get better with age, winning 121 games after his 40th birthday.
7. Power-hitting Jimmie Foxx had a 20 year career playing for all but which of the following teams?

Answer: Brooklyn Dodgers

Jimmie Foxx is best known as the slugging first baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics during the 1920's and 1930's. Foxx, who was sometimes known as "The Beast", was a great player who hit 534 homers in his career. Foxx was the second member of the 500 home run club.
8. Senator Jim Bunning threw a National League perfect game on Father's Day in 1964. He also had an American League no-hitter. Which team did he never play for?

Answer: New York Yankees

When Bunning pitched his perfect game in 1964, that was the first time a perfect game had been thrown in the National League since 1880. Bunning, the Republican Senator from Kentucky, had a 224-184 career record.
9. Reggie Jackson has over 100 home runs with three separate teams. Which of these teams is not one of them?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Reggie Jackson began his career with the A's, back when they were in Kansas City. In addition to these teams, he also played with the Baltimore Orioles. Jackson, known as Mr. October due to his post season heroics, was a 21 season player. He was a 14 year All-Star and picked up the American League MVP award in 1973 as a member of the Oakland A's. Jackson hit 563 career home runs.
10. Joe "Ducky" Medwick played 17 seasons for 5 teams from 1932-1948. Which team did he never play for?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

Joe Medwick was a rough and tough player of the "Gashouse Gang" Cardinals of the 1930's. In 1937, Medwick claimed the last triple crown of the National League when he led the league in nine offensive categories. He obviously won the MVP that year. In addition to the teams mentioned, Medwick also played for the New York Giants.
