After the awful debut, Joe spent the rest of the 1944 season in the minor league. Joe decided to skip playing pro ball in 1945 and 1946 in order to focus on high school. In 1947, Nuxhall made his return to baseball but ended up in the minor leagues for 5 years. Joe finally made it back to the big leagues in 1952, and played ball for 16 years earning two all-star appearances and leading the league in shutouts during the 1955 season.
