Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The three Grade 1 races in the Triple Crown are the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Did any filly ever win the Triple Crown in the 19th or 20th centuries?

Answer: No

Although there have been numerous fillies that have raced in individual Triple Crown races, no filly ever ran in all three in either the 19th or 20th centuries, thus none were able to win the Triple Crown. Fillies have been spoilers however and won one leg of the three races.
2. Fillies have 'beat the boys' in Triple Crown races. Which filly was the first to win one of the races that now make up the Triple Crown races?

Answer: Ruthless

And ruthless she was! She won the Belmont Stakes in 1867. Her dam was Barbarity who also gave birth to other award-winning fillies, all full sisters of Ruthless: Remorseless, Relentless, Regardless, and Merciless. Their father was the great Eclipse for which the American Thoroughbred horse racing Eclipse Awards were named.
3. Which filly won the Preakness Stakes against "the boys" in 2009?

Answer: Rachel Alexandra

Frontrunner Rachel Alexandra, wearing #13 silks with jockey Calvin Borel on-board, beat Mine That Bird (winner of the Kentucky Derby that year) handily, by one length. That race day she became the first filly to win the Preakness in 85 years. Rachel Alexandra is described as a beautiful 16 hands bay mare with a white blaze.
4. Did Rachel Alexandra win an Eclipse Award?

Answer: Yes

The Eclipse Award is an American Thoroughbred horse racing award. It is so-named after an 18th-century British racehorse and sire, Eclipse. An Eclipse Award Trophy is presented in 17 categories. Rachel Alexandra won the Eclipse Award in the Horse of the Year category in 2009.
5. Rachel Alexandra had a formidable filly opponent for racing awards who was racing on the west coast, Rachel on the east coast. This filly, Zenyatta, was the first filly to win the Breeders' Cup Classic against 'the boys.' Did Zenyatta ever win an Eclipse Award?

Answer: Yes

In 2010, Rachel's rival Zenyatta won the prestigious Horse of the Year Eclipse Award that Rachel had won the previous year. Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta never raced against each other.

It was "The Rivalry That Never Was." Jerry Ross, owner of Zenyatta said, "I haven't seen anything else like what we saw in those years and the interest those two horses created. We always thought Zenyatta would face Rachel Alexandra but sadly [they] never did."

Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta entered the Racing Hall of Fame together in 2016.
6. It is always sad to see a thoroughbred in competition 'breakdown' and lose their life. What was the name of the filly that lost her life due to breaking down on the track during a match race against a colt who had won the Kentucky Derby?

Answer: Ruffian

Which horse was better became which sex was better, colts or fillies? Ruffian was entered in a match race because she lacked competition amongst the fillies. Secretariat's trainer was Lucien Laurin. He said of Ruffian, "As God is my judgment, this filly may be better than Secretariat!" Others touted that they believed Ruffian could have won "either division of that year's Hopeful Stakes, Saratoga's most prestigious race for colts, by twenty lengths." In the match race with Foolish Pleasure, Ruffian was ahead by a half-length when she broke her leg.

This was a reminder to all athletes and spectators, that sometimes the price for greatness is one's life.
7. Regret, Genuine Risk, and Winning Colors were all fillies that won a leg of the Triple Crown races, dashing hopes of many a colt hoping to win a Triple Crown. Which 'leg' did all three win against the colts?

Answer: The Kentucky Derby

Regret was the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby. She accomplished this is in 1915. Genuine Risk was the second filly to win the Kentucky Derby in 1980, and Winning Colors was the third to win in 1988.
8. Who was the great filly who in 2007 was the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes in a century?

Answer: Rags to Riches

Rags to Riches fought hard, neck-and-neck with Curlin, who had won the Preakness three weeks earlier. Rags to Riches is one of three-generations of Belmont Stakes winners in Belmont Stakes history. Her father was the 1992 winner (A.P. Indy), and her grandpa won in 1977 (Seattle Slew).
9. Who was the sire of the great filly, Lady's Secret?

Answer: Secretariat

Lady's Secret was Horse of the Year in 1986, a rare honor for a filly. This was due to beating America's top colts that year in Grade races four times. 'The Blood-Horse' magazine ranked her number 76 in its Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century. She was also inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame.
10. The Triple Tiara, formerly known as the Filly Triple Crown, the filly equivalent of the American Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, consists of the Acorn Stakes (Belmont Park), Kentucky Oaks (Louisville) and the Alabama Stakes (Saratoga).

Answer: False

There have been failed attempts to develop a triple crown for fillies but the suggested series of three races has not been created as a "Triple Tiara". These failures to form a tiara for talented fillies were either not recognized by the racing press or not recognized by the New York Racing Association.
