Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The Chicago Cougars were one of the founding franchises of the WHA in 1972 but folded after just three seasons. They reached the World Trophy Finals in 1974, losing to the Houston Aeros.

The Cincinnati Stingers were an expansion franchise who began play in 1975, playing home games at the Riverfront Coliseum. They remained in existence until the WHA ceased operations in 1979.

The Cleveland Crusdaers existed between 1972 and 1976, but left town for Minnesota when the California Golden Seals of the NHL relocated to Cleveland.

There were two incarnations of the Minnesota Fighting Saints, both of which played home games in St Paul. The first began play in 1972, but went bust midway through the 1975-76 season. The second team of that name was the relocated Cleveland Crusaders franchise, but they failed to complete the 1976-77 season.

The Denver Spurs were originally a team in the Western Hockey League before that organisation folded. The Spurs were admitted into the WHA in 1976, but left town to become the Ottawa Civics after playing just 34 games.

The Houston Aeros were a founding member of the WHA in 1972, and were league champions in both 1974 and 1975. The team's owners expected to be included in a WHA/NHL merger in 1978, but when this didn't transpire the club declined to take part in the final WHA season in 1978-79.

The Indianapolis Racers began play in 1974, and folded part-way through the 1978-79 season. They are probably best-remembered as the first professional team that Wayne Gretzky played for.

The San Diego Mariners began life as the New York Raiders in 1972, but after just one season they moved across the Hudson River to Cherry Hill, New Jersey. In 1974, they were on the move again, to California. The Mariners lasted for three seasons in San Diego before ceasing operations in 1977.

The Phoenix Roadrunners were a former Western Hockey League team who joined the WHA in 1974. The franchise folded after the 1976-77 season.

The Los Angeles Sharks were one of the WHA's original franchises in 1972. They only existed in California for two seasons before relocating to Detroit where they were renamed the Michigan Stags.

The Birmingham Bulls began life as the Ottawa Nationals in 1972, before moving across Ontario to become the Toronto Toros just one year later. After three seasons in Toronto, they relocated to Alabama to become the Bulls. When the WHA ceased operations in 1979, the Bulls joined the Central Hockey League before folding in 1981.

The Calgary Cowboys began life as the Philadelphia Blazers in 1972 but lasted for just a single season in Pennsylvania before relocating to Vancouver in 1973. Two years later they were on the move again, to Calgary, where the team's nickname was changed to Cowboys. After two seasons at the Stampede Corral, the club folded in 1977.
