1. There were five greats inducted into the Hall during its first induction. In which year did this take place?

Answer: 1936

In 1936, the first five greats inducted were Babe Ruth, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Honus Wagner, and Ty Cobb. Of the five inductees, Ty Cobb received the most votes.
2. Branch Rickey managed for 10 seasons in the Majors and never finished better than third place. He retired from managing in 1925 and was inducted into the Hall in 1967. What accomplishment put him into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: Broke baseball's color barrier

The owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers broke the color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson to a contract. Robinson won the Rookie of the Year in 1947, then won the NL MVP in 1949. Robinson's contract opened the door for many players in the Negro League, including Larry Doby who was the first black to play in the American League with the Indians.

Answer: Pud Galvin

Galvin, a pitcher, played mainly for the Buffalo Bisons of the National League in the 1880s, and retired in 1892. His career win/loss was 394-310 over 15 seasons. It took 73 years after his retirement before baseball would see his name enshrined. He was a sole inductee in 1965.

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Although all Hall of Fame inductees, the others were not inducted for another 20 years. In 1942, Hornsby after 23 seasons, retired in 1937. Of his many outstanding accomplishments in the game, he won the Triple Crown twice, the National League MVP twice, and retired with an amazing .358 career batting average.
5. Dennis Eckersley joined the promised land in 2004 along with one other baseball great. Who joined Dennis to be enshrined?

Answer: Paul Molitor

The other greats were all previous inductees. Molitor played for 15 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, three with Toronto, then three with the Twins before retiring in 1998. Paul entered the Hall in his first year of eligibility.

Answer: 1930s

The great Denton True 'Cy' Young was inducted in the second ceremonies of the award in 1937 along with seven other greats. Young pitched for 22 seasons and retired with the most wins by a pitcher with 511. The Cy Young Award was named after him which was first awarded in 1956.

Answer: Connie Mack

While Gehrig of the Yankees was inducted into the Hall in 1939 after his final season of baseball, Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack would beat Gehrig to the punch. Mack was inducted in 1937. At the time, Connie was in his 40th season of managing. He went on to manage a total of 53 seasons and retired in 1950.
