Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Leeds United won the old Division One title, Burnley won the old Division Four title, and Denmark won the European Championships. Which year ties all three together?

Answer: 1992

Leeds won the title under the guidance of Howard Wilkinson. The driving force behind their success were players such as David Batty, Rod Wallace, Gordon Strachan, and Eric Cantona. Burnley became the last ever winners of Division Four by gaining 83 points, six more than Rotherham United. Denmark's story in Euro '92 is what fantasies are made of. Yugoslavia were forced to pull out of the finals, paving the way for Denmark. What followed was the Danes going all the way, and beating Germany 2-0 in the final. John Jensen and Kim Vilfort scored the goals in the game.
2. Eric Cantona attacks a Crystal Palace supporter, Blackburn Rovers win the Premiership title, and Everton win the FA Cup. Which year was this?

Answer: 1995

Cantona's kung-fu style kick on a Crystal Palace supporter after being sent off in the game earned the Frenchman an eight month ban, and 120 hours of community service. In the press conference that ensued, Cantona uttered the now famous words "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea." Blackburn's title success came courtesy of owner Jack Walker's millions, and a certain Alan Shearer.

Shearer scored for fun that season, and alongside Chris Sutton, became what was known as the "SAS". Everton won the 1995 FA Cup final 1-0, thanks to Paul Rideout's 30th minute goal against Manchester United.

The Toffee's team that day was: Neville Southall, Matt Jackson, Dave Watson, Gary Ablett, David Unsworth, Joe Parkinson, Barry Horne, Anders Limpar, Andy Hinchcliffe, Paul Rideout, and Graham Stuart. Coming on as substitutes were Daniel Amokachi and Duncan Ferguson.
3. Peter Shilton pulls on an England shirt for the 100th time, Marco van Basten becomes European Footballer of the Year, and Wimbledon win the FA Cup. Which year is it?

Answer: 1988

He won the European Footballer of the Year title three times in 1988, 1989, and 1992, and also became the World Player of the Year in 1992. Van Basten scored 24 goals in 58 games for his country, and became coach of the national side in 2004.

The side that was formerly Wimbledon produced a major shock in the 1988 FA Cup final, as they defeated Liverpool 1-0. Lawrie Sanchez scored the only goal of the game in the 37th minute. Wimbledon's team that day was: Dave Beasant, Clive Goodyear, Terry Phelan, Vinny Jones, Eric Young, Andy Thorn, Terry Gilson, Alan Cork, John Fashanu, Lawrie Sanchez, and Dennis Wise. Also making substitute appearances were John Scales and Laurie Cunningham. Legend has it that Alan Cork refused to shave his beard throughout the tournament as a good luck charm!
4. 96 football supporters lose their lives at Hillsborough, Arsenal win the League title in the last game of the season, and Liverpool win the FA Cup. Which year was this?

Answer: 1989

The Hillsborough disaster occured on 15th April, when 96 Liverpool supporters were crushed after the gates were opened to let in more fans to the stadium. Liverpool and Nottingham Forest were the teams that day in an FA Cup semi-final game, which was abandoned after six minutes of play after fans poured onto the pitch in the ensuing crush. Because of the Hillsborough disaster, the Liverpool v Arsenal game took place at the end of the season, after all other games had been played. Going into the game on 26th May, Liverpool were in pole position for the title, with Arsenal having to win by two goals at Anfield. Alan Smith scored the opener for the Gunners in the 52nd minute, and at 1-0, the game ticked on.

The Liverpool supporters were in full voice as the clock reached 92 minutes but incredibly, Michael Thomas scored the title-winning goal and Arsenal were champions, beating Liverpool 2-0.

In a classic FA Cup final, Liverpool beat their Merseyside neighbours 3-2. John Aldridge scored as early as the fourth minute to put the reds in the lead, but Stuart McCall levelled the tie in the 89th minute to send the game into extra time.

In the 94th minute Ian Rush put Liverpool 2-1 ahead, but McCall once more levelled the score in the 102nd. Ian Rush once again proved to be the jewel in Anfield's crown as he scored the winner in the 104th minute. Liverpool's team that day was: Bruce Grobbelaar, Gary Ablett, Steve Staunton, Steve Nicol, Ronnie Whelan, Alan Hansen, Peter Beardsley, John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, John Barnes, and Steve McMahon.
