Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Tampa Bay Rays had a wonderous season in 2008 and went to their first World Series. What player who did not get called up until the end of May, wound up winning the AL Rookie of the Year Award?

Answer: Evan Longoria

Longoria, a third basemen, wound up with a .272 average, 27 home runs, 85 RBIs, and 31 doubles to garner the franchise's first award winner of any kind.
2. What University of Illinois and Chicago Bears running back, a cold spectre of sorts, was named to be the greatest football player of all-time by ESPN in 2008?

Answer: Red Grange

A three-time All-American (maximum number possible then) "The Wheaton Ice Man" and a.k.a. "The Galloping Ghost", had exploits too numerous to mention, but the University of Illinois retired his number 77. He did build strength toting ice, a position he took for the money only. Chris Berman of ESPN in interviewing George Halas who was Grange's coach with the Bears, asked how many yards Grange would get in a season at the time of the interview.

The response Halas gave of about 800 didn't exactly overwhelm Berman. Halas in response reminded Berman that Grange was then about 75 years old.
3. Who was the first Chicago Cub to win a Rookie of the Year Award?

Answer: Billy Williams

The others never played for the Cubs. Billy won the award in 1961 over Joe Torre of the Braves.
4. What was Yankee Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record?

Answer: 2130

Many ball players today want games off just to be "fresh" for upcoming games. Today's players get the benefits of airplane travel instead of riding on trains and buses. Today's athletes also have trainers who make up weightlifting regimes and specific diets to help keep players healthy.

It's amazing that Gehrig played so many consecutive games without all the advantages of today. After Gehrig's death, x-rays showed that he had broken several bones earlier in his career, but still managed to play through those injuries.
5. This team joined the United States Football League (USFL) in 1984. They played in San Antonio. What was the name of this team who played in Alamo Stadium?

Answer: Gunslingers

The USFLs San Antonio Gunslingers went down with the league in 1985.
6. In which year did the great New York Yankee Lou Gehrig give his farewell speech to the Yankee faithful?

Answer: 1939

Gary Cooper in the movie "Pride of the Yankees" gave a very good performance in emulating Gehrig's farewell speech. Cooper even looked like Gehrig. Lou died two years after his speech.
7. Despite the Tampa Bay Rays losing their first World Series to the Phillies in 2008, it was not due to which Rays player who tied a record by hitting seven postseason home runs?

Answer: B.J. Upton

Upton hit an amazing seven postseason home runs. More amazing was that none were in the World Series itself.
8. In the 2008 Major League Baseball season, what was the Washington Nationals season record?

Answer: 59-102

The Nationals were in their fourth season since moving from Montreal. It also continued the streak of four seasons without a winning record.
9. Who was the first NFL running back to rush for 10,000 career yards?

Answer: Jim Brown

While the other great running backs rushed for well over 10,000 yards, Brown of the Cleveland Browns did it first by a mile. In only nine seasons ending in 1965, he rushed for 12,312 yards.
10. Which NFL team scored the first touchdown in Super Bowl history?

Answer: Green Bay Packers

It took a little more than half of the first period to see QB Bart Starr throw a 37-yard pass to Max McGee. McGee was not scheduled to play and came to the game with a hangover, but replaced an ailing Boyd Dowler. The Packers played the Kansas City Chiefs, and won the first-ever Super Bowl under head coach Vince Lombardi, 35-10.
