Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1988 was an incredible year for the Swedish tennis player Mats Wilander. Not only did he win the US Open but also won the singles events in the French Open and the Australian Open. The 1988 US Open men's singles final was the same fixture as that of 1987. In 1987, Wilander lost but in 1988 he managed to deal the same fate to his opponent that his opponent had dealt to him a year earlier. Who was his Czech opponent in both the 1987 and 1988 US Open finals?

Answer: Ivan Lendl

In Mats Wilander's most successful year, he managed to beat Czechoslovakia's Ivan Lendl in the final of the 1988 US Open. By the end of both of their careers, the two men had a combined total of 15 major titles to their name. Lendl managed to win eight major titles, including three US Open events in 1985, 1986 and 1987, and Wilander managed to claim seven major titles.

The only major tournament that eluded them was Wimbledon, with Wilander only ever making it to the quarterfinals and Lendl making the final on two occasions. The score of the 1988 US Open men's singles final was a win for Wilander by three sets to two, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, and 6-4.

It was the first men's final at the US Open to go to the final set since the clash between John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg in 1980.
2. The US Open of 1989 saw the first ever German champion at the event. In a tournament that has run since 1881, that win signified the cessation of a staggering 108 year drought. What is the name of this player, who at the time was representing West Germany?

Answer: Boris Becker

Boris Becker is one of the sport's greatest players. His most noteworthy achievement, besides winning six major titles, was to be the youngest ever Wimbledon singles champion when he won the event in 1989 at the age of just seventeen. Becker beat Czechoslovakia's Ivan Lendl in the final of the 1989 US Open men's single event in four sets, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, and 7-6.

This would prove to be Becker's only championship win in New York.
3. Quite a few tennis players have managed to win the US Open men's singles title in consecutive years. Stefan Edberg won the US Open championships in 1991 and 1992, but what country was he representing?

Answer: Sweden

Stefan Edberg was born in Vastervik in the year that England won the FIFA Football (Soccer) World Cup of 1966. By 1985, he had already won his first Grand Slam event, the Australian Open. He would also go on to win Wimbledon and the US Open at various times in his career. Like many successful tennis players, there is usually a surface which doesn't suit their play as well as other surfaces do. By extension, there is usually a Grand Slam event that will elude them throughout their career. For Edberg, his relative weakness was on clay and the furthest he ever managed to get in a French Open tournament was the final. Can't really complain about that though.
4. 1997 saw the first of two consecutive wins at the US Open for the Australian, Patrick Rafter. In the final, which lasted four sets, Rafter played a British opponent. Who was his opponent, the first British male to reach the US Open final since 1936, in this match?

Answer: Greg Rusedski

Greg Rusedski couldn't make the final step and pick up the title in New York. The title went to Patrick Rafter who won the match by three sets to one, 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, and 7-5. Despite Rusedski's loss, the road to the final was one which hadn't been undertaken by a British player since Fred Perry in 1936. Perry did however manage to win the US Open, beating America's Don Budge.
At the 1998 US Open Patrick Rafter would successfully defend his title, competing against fellow Australian, Mark Philippoussis.
5. The 1999 US Open men's singles competition saw the same outcome as that of 1994. Who was the winner of the US Open in 1999 and was also known for his marriage to Steffi Graf?

Answer: Andre Agassi

Andre Agassi is one of the very few men to have won all four of the Grand Slam tournaments on the tennis tour. He was most successful in Melbourne, winning the Australian Open four times. Furthermore he became the champion at Wimbledon, his first major win, in 1992 and became the king of clay, winning at the 1999 French Open. Add those titles to the two wins at the US Open and one gets an impressive total of eight Grand Slam titles.
6. The 2000 US Open saw the first Russian male tennis player win the competition. What is the name of this player who also won the 2005 Australian Open?

Answer: Marat Safin

As well as entering the record books by becoming the first Russian man to win the US Open, Marat Safin became the first Russian to reach the semifinals of the Wimbledon men's singles event in 2008. The 2000 US Open final was a one-sided match between Marat Safin and America's Pete Sampras. Sampras was, at the time, looking for his fifth US Open title but Safin had other ideas and won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, and 6-3.
7. The winner of the 2001 US Open was Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, who in the final beat America's Pete Sampras in straight sets. Has Lleyton Hewitt ever won the men's doubles event at the US Open?

Answer: Yes

Lleyton Hewitt won the men's doubles event at the US Open in 2000 with his partner, Max Mirnyi. The duo beat South Africa's Ellis Ferreira and America's Rick Leach by two sets to one. For the second year in a row (2000 and 2001), Pete Sampras had reached the final but had been denied his fifth US Open title. In 2000, he was beaten by Marat Safin and in 2001 by Lleyton Hewitt.
8. To many people the winner of the 2002 US Open men's singles event was the best player in the history of tennis. What is the name of this legendary American tennis player who won fourteen Grand Slam titles in 15 years?

Answer: Pete Sampras

Quite amazing to think that Pete Sampras was able to maintain such a high standard of play for fifteen years! The major wins Sampras had to his name include an astonishing seven at Wimbledon, two at the Australian Open and five at the US Open. The only Grand Slam event that Sampras couldn't win was the French Open, only ever making it as far as the semifinals.

His US Open titles were won in 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 2002. The 2002 US Open final was a match between Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, players who were both previous champions at the event. Sampras won in four sets, 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, and 6-4.
9. The 2003 US Open final was won by America's Andy Roddick. Roddick's opponent was the first Spanish man to reach a US Open final since Manuel Orantes in 1975. Who was Andy Roddick's opponent in the final?

Answer: Juan Carlos Ferrero

Juan Carlos Ferrero, who was born in the Valencian municipality of Onteniente in 1980, had a fantastic run through the 2003 US Open. Not only did he eliminate former US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals but he also eliminated another former US Open champion in the semifinals.

After beating Andre Agassi in the semifinals he booked his place in the final against Andy Roddick. Neither of these players had won the tournament before so there was guaranteed to be a brand new champion. Andy Roddick proved to be that champion, crushing Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, and 6-3.
10. Records really are meant to be broken and that is exactly what happened when the record of fourteen tennis Grand Slam wins by one man was overtaken. What is the name of the 2008 US Open champion who broke the aforementioned record when he won the 2009 Wimbledon tournament?

Answer: Roger Federer

When Federer fell to the floor in joy as he won the 2009 Wimbledon men's singles title, Pete Sampras applauded from the royal box at Centre Court. Upon winning, Federer had beaten Pete Sampras' record of fourteen major titles in fifteen years. The new record, set by Federer, stood at fifteen major titles in just 11 years! Federer's win at the 2008 US Open was his fifth consecutive title in New York.

Incredibly the Swiss-born tennis legend won the event in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. No other tennis player has really had a chance at taking the title, in fact, none of his opponents in the final have even taken two sets against him.
