Answer: 1983

On 25th June 1983, India beat the West Indies by 43 runs to become cricket's world champs at Lord's in London, England. The team, which comprised of Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar amongst others, posted a score of 183 all out, while the Windies could only manage 140. Brazilian, Nelson Piquet won his second Formula One title with 59 points, just two points ahead of second placed Alain Prost. Carl Lewis posted a time of 10.07 seconds to win the 100 metres World title in 1983, to go alongside a length of 8.55 metres in the long jump which he also won that year.

Answer: 1990

Stephen Hendry became the world champion of snooker by beating Jimmy White 18-12. He also became the youngest winner of the title at the age of 21 years and 106 days. West Germany beat Argentina in soccer's World Cup, 1-0 with an 85th minute penalty from Andreas Brehme, and Phil Taylor won his first of sixteen world titles by beating Eric Bristow, 6-1 in the final at Lakeside Country Club in Surrey.

New Zealand, led by captain David Kirk, beat France 29-9 in the final of the very first Rugby Union World Cup. The final took place at Eden park in Auckland. Australian Wayne Gardner won his only 500cc motorcycling title on a Honda. Mike Tyson beat Tony Tucker to become the undisputed champion of the world. Tyson held the undisputed title for three years before a shock knockout loss to James 'Buster' Douglas.

Carl fogerty won four world superbike titles in his career in 1994, 1995, 1998, and 1999, all on a Ducati. Brazil and Italy played out a 0-0 draw in the soccer World Cup final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, with Brazil winning 3-2 on penalties. Michael Schumacher, driving for the Benetton team, won the first of seven F1 titles with 92 points, just one point ahead of second-placed Damon Hill.

Mexican Barrera beat Daniel Cobrita Jiminez on points to win the first of many world titles. The 49ers beat the San Diego Chargers, 49-26 on 29th January, 1995, with QB Steve Young winning the MVP. They thus became the first team to win the Super Bowl five times.

The Atlanta Braves beat the Cleveland Indians 4-2 to win the World Series. They became the first franchise to become World Series champions in three different cities, having previously won it when based in Boston and Milwaukee.

St Kilda Saints, based in Melbourne, won their only VFL/AFL championship of the 20th century, beating Geelong Cats 114-105 in the Grand Final. Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup, beating Montreal Canadiens 4-2 in what was the final season of the "six team era" of the NHL. Peggy Fleming of the USA won the second of three consecutive ice skating world titles in Vienna.

She would also win gold at the 1968 Winter Olympics.

New Orleans Saints won Super Bowl XLIV, beating Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in Miami.

The Washington Bullets won basketball's NBA title for the first time when they defeated the Seattle Supersonics by four games to three in the finals.

In 1997, the team would change their name to the more politically-correct Wizards.

Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup for the first time when they bested Ottawa Senators by four games to one in the finals. Scott Niedermayer was the finals MVP.
10. In which year did Rocky Marciano become undisputed World Heavyweight boxing champion, New York Yankees win the World Series and Detroit Lions win the NFL championship?

Answer: 1952

Rocky Marciano knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott in the thirteenth round of their world title fight in Philadelphia to become world champion. He would go on to successfully defend his crown six times before retiring undefeated in 1956. The New York Yankees defeated crosstown rivals Brooklyn Dodgers four games to three to win their fourth straight title, and fifteenth overall.

The 1952 NFL championship game took place at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, and the Detroit Lions upset the hometown Browns 17-7 to win their first title since 1935.
