Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Sid Bream played in MLB from 1983-1994 for four teams; his stint at playing first base for the Braves was from 1991-1993. He is best known for scoring the run that took the team to the World Series in 1992.
Jeff Treadway was the team's second baseman. He played from 1987-1995 for five teams in MLB, and for the Braves from 1989-1992. After retiring he managed the Macon Braves, a minor league club, for two years and then went on to work in high school programs.
Tom Glavine pitched for the Braves from 1987-2002, and then returned in 2008 after a stay with the New York Mets. He had been drafted by both the Braves and the LA Kings (ice hockey) in 1984, but ultimately choose baseball as a career. In 1991 - quite an eventful year for him - Glavine won 20 games, and had an ERA of 2.55. In addition, he was the National League Cy Young winner, won the Silver Slugger Award, for the best offensive player at his position, and was chosen for the National League All-Star Team. In 2014 he was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Mike Heath was the catcher that fateful season. He had already played for four Major League teams during fourteen Major League seasons; in 1978 he was a member of the New York Yankees World Champion team. He ended his career in Atlanta in 1991, ultimately playing a variety of positions over the course of the year.
Rafael Belliard played shortstop for Atlanta from 1991-98, and was a member of the 1995 World Series Championship Braves team. He worked for several baseball organizations after his retirement.
Mark Wohlers first debuted for the Braves on August 17, 1991, and was their main closer until 1995, when he was a member of the World Series Championship team. At a spring training session in 1995, one of his pitches was recorded at 103 miles per hour. He left the team in 1999, and played for three others before his retirement in 2002. Since then he has owned a real estate business with his wife.
Ron Gant played outfield for eight different teams from 1987-2003; he played for the Braves from 1987-1993. In 1991 he won the Silver Slugger Award at his position. Since his retirement from baseball Gant has been pursuing a career in broadcasting.
Another outfielder for the Braves, David Justice won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1990, and led the National League in RBIs in 1991. The same year he won a Silver Slugger Award and was selected for the NL All-Star Game. He stayed with the team until 1996, when he retired from baseball due to back problems. In 2007 he was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame.
Deion Sanders, outfielder, was a multi-sport athlete in 1991; he came to the Braves from the Yankees that year, and is the only athlete to date to score a NFL touchdown and hit a MLB home run in the same week, as he was also under contract with the Atlanta Falcons. Unfortunately he missed the 1991 post season due to injury. In recent years Sanders has been seen coaching in college football.
Terry Pendleton was the team's third baseman. He had signed with the Braves as a free agent in 1990, and 1991 was statistically his best season in the Majors. He was named the National League MVP in 1991 after achieving a batting average of .319 and having 187 hits. After retirement he coached in MLB from 2002-2017. In 2019 Pendleton was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame.
John Smoltz played 21 seasons in MLB, from 1988-2009, and was on the Braves' roster every year except the last. He was the opening day starting pitcher in 1991. In 1992 Smoltz was the MVP of the National League Championship Series, and he was the National League Cy Young winner in 1996. After having Tommy John surgery in 2001, he became one of the team's relievers; in 2002 he had 55 saves. That year he became the second pitcher in history to record 20 wins and 50 saves. John Smoltz was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015. Since retiring from baseball he has been seen on television as a sports analyst.
All of the other people listed played for the Braves organization at one time or another, but not in 1991.
