Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the first script for "Seinfeld" written by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld?

Answer: Diner

The first script for "Seinfeld" was written at Westway Diner on 44th and 9th avenue in New York. NBC wanted to do something with Jerry Seinfeld so they sat down together and instead of a one hour/two hour comedy special they wrote the first script of a sitcom. Basically, the sitcom would be four people going about their day-to-day lives.

Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld would fire the majority of the writers at the end of every season and hire new ones for the next season so they could have fresh ideas. The sitcom's shooting schedule would also begin on a Wednesday and film on a Tuesday so Larry and Jerry could do any rewrites over the weekend.

The female lead would be a waitress at the restaurant called Pete's where Jerry and George would eat and talk about their day. Lee Garlington won the part of the waitress. After the pilot for "Seinfeld" was seen as weak, Lee Garlington's waitress character was let go from "Seinfeld".
2. Whose off-the-cuff remark gave Larry David the inspiration to kill George Costanza's fiancée, Susan?

Answer: Julia Louis Dreyfus

Heidi Swedberg was not well-liked on "Seinfeld". During a late-night meal at a diner, the cast discussed how hard it was to work with Swedberg. In a joking manner, Julia Louis Dreyfus mentioned that maybe they should kill her. Because of Julia's remark, Larry David was struck with the inspiration to kill Susan and do it in a manner that was more funny than sad. Susan's death on "Seinfeld" would be known to the cast and crew as the "single coldest moment in the history of television".

Susan's death by licking cheap envelopes in "The Invitations" was written by Larry David as his swan song. He left as a writer for "Seinfeld" and only returned to write the series finale in 1998.
3. The episode of "Seinfeld" that received the longest bout of laughter contained a storyline about a golf ball inside a whale. What was the name of the episode?

Answer: The Marine Biologist

"The Marine Biologist" (season 5 episode 14) originally aired in the United States on February 10, 1994. The episode centered around George's girlfriend believing he was a marine biologist. When a whale became beached, George's girlfriend asked him to help the whale. The episode was supposed to end with a stripped down George entering the ocean. Larry David didn't think that was a great enough ending and quickly wrote a monologue for Jason Alexander. Using his photographic memory, Jason memorized the monologue while he sat on the diner set where he would give the monologue.

The longest laugh the series had ever received was when George pulled out a Titleist golf ball that he retrieved from the blow hole of the beached whale. The laughter went on so long that the sound mixer had to wipe part of it out during editing.

In another storyline, Kramer started hitting Titleist golf balls into the ocean thus bringing both storylines together when George produced one of the golf balls that Kramer had been hitting into the ocean.
4. When looking for the character of Kramer, Larry David suggested Michael Richards who he had worked with on what weekday named comedy series?

Answer: Fridays

"Fridays" was a late night comedy series on ABC. Larry David and Michael Richards starred on the show from its conception in 1980 to its demise in 1982. Brandon Tartikoff and Jerry Seinfeld auditioned Michael Richards for the role of Kramer while Brandon was between meetings at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

The character of Kramer was taken from Larry David's former neighbor, Kenny Kramer.
5. Which cast member of "Seinfeld" was the first to win an Emmy?

Answer: Michael Richards

Michael Richards won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for 1993. Jay Leno gave him the award. During his speech he remarked "This is just a great honor" and went on to thank his peers, his mother, his daughter and his mentor. The two episodes he submitted for Emmy consideration were "The Watch" and "The Junior Mint".

Michael would win the Emmy two more times in 1994 and 1997.
6. Jason Alexander was a Broadway actor when he was asked to audition for the role of George Costanza.

Answer: True

Jason was a Tony award winning Broadway actor famous for "Jerome Robbins' Broadway" and "Broadway Bound". He won his first Tony for "Jerome Robbins' Broadway". According to Jerry Seinfeld, all he needed to hear was two lines of the script from Jason to know they had found George Costanza.

The character of George Costanza was based loosely on Larry David.
7. Which one of George and Jerry's parents had two different people playing the part?

Answer: The father

Frank Costanza was first played by John Randolph in the fourth season episode "The Handicap Spot". He was replaced by Jerry Stiller from season five to the end of the series in 1998. According to Jerry and Larry David, they wanted Frank Costanza to be more of an in-your-face character and Jerry Stiller turned out to be just that actor.

Morty Seinfeld was first played by Phil Bruns in the first season episode "The Stakeout". He was replaced by Barney Martin who continued the role until the end of the series in 1998. Jerry and Larry David wanted to go in a gruffer direction with Morty so they switched actors.
8. "Seinfeld" received its first Emmy in Outstanding Writing for what aptly named episode?

Answer: The Contest

Larry David won an Emmy in Outstanding Writing for a TV series by writing the script for "The Contest". In the episode, Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer made a bet to see who could be "master of their domain".

The phrase "master of their domain" became Seinfeld's first catchphrase.
9. Julia Louis Dreyfus auditioned for the role of Elaine. Larry David had also worked with Julia as a writer to her actor on what late night comedy sketch show?

Answer: Saturday Night Live

Julia Louis Dreyfus acted for three years on "Saturday Night Live" while Larry David worked one year on the show as a writer. She took over as the female lead and appeared on the second episode of "Seinfeld".

With Julia Louis Dreyfus taking over as the female lead and Lee Garlington no longer playing a waitress at the diner, Jerry and Larry David decided to go ahead and change the name of the diner used in the series to Monk's. A poster of Thelonius Monk pinned up in the office was the inspiration for the name of the diner.

Elaine Benes was based on Larry David's former girlfriend, Monica Yates. In a twist, Elaine's father was based on Monica's father, Richard Yates.
10. How long was the series finale of "Seinfeld"?

Answer: 75 minutes

Larry David wrote the script for the series finale of "Seinfeld". When the table read occurred, the script was one-hundred pages instead of the usual forty-five to fifty pages. The series finale script had to be turned in at the end of each day.

The series finale was filmed in front of a studio audience (who all signed NDAs) on April 8, 1998. Actors were announced before the taping of the episode instead of after the show. The filming started at 6:30 PM on April 8, 1998 and ended at 2 AM on April 9, 1998.

The series finale of "Seinfeld" aired on May 14, 1998. TVLand stopped airing their shows and left a note on the screen saying they were watching "Seinfeld". Seventy-six million people watched the series finale of "Seinfeld". At the age of eighty-two, Frank Sinatra died during the airing of the series finale.
