Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the names of the former school colleagues who were responsible for the creation of 'Time' magazine?

Answer: Britton Hadden & Henry Luce

Hadden and Luce were former students of Yale University where they both worked on the student newspaper the 'Yale Daily News'. Initially intending to call the magazine 'Facts', 'Time' became the first news magazine to be published on a weekly basis.
2. The first edition of 'Time' magazine was published on the 3rd of March in which year?

Answer: 1923

At the princely sum of fifteen cents, the first edition of 'Time' featured an image of Joseph G. Cannon, the former U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives, on the front cover. In commemoration of the fifteenth anniversary of 'Time', facsimiles of the entire first edition were included with the issue released on 28th February 1938.
3. Having just become the first person to fly solo and non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, Charles Lindbergh's feat was recognised by 'Time' by having his image appear on the cover of their very first issue.

Answer: False

Linbergh's historic flight did not take place until 1927, just over four years after the publication of the first issue of 'Time'. His accomplishment did not go unnoticed however; he was named as the inaugural recipient of the 'Man of the Year' for 1927.

This was perhaps to remedy the editorial oversight of not featuring Lindbergh on the front cover following his flight. Either way, a tradition had begun.
4. With the term 'political correctness' still decades away, the 1936 'Man of the Year' award actually went to a woman. Famous for having a King give up his position on the royal throne in order to marry her, who was this woman?

Answer: Wallis Simpson

Wallis Simpson, nee Spencer, was a two time divorcee and alleged mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales, whilst still in her second marriage. Ascending to the throne in January 1936 following the death of George V, Edward's behaviour and relationship with Simpson was frowned upon by both his family and the UK Government. Edward abdicated in December 1936 when it was made clear to him that the Church of England did not allow for divorcees to re-marry if their former spouses were still living and, as the head of the Church of England, he had to comply. Edward and Wallis (the Duke and Duchess of Windsor) were married in June 1937.
5. Beginning with Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934, every subsequent U.S. President has been named 'Man of the Year' by 'Time' until ... Who was the first U.S. President to miss out on this award?

Answer: Gerald Ford

Roosevelt was named 'Man of the Year' on three seperate occasions. The first of these was in 1932, the year before his presidency began, with 1934 and 1941 rounding out the trifecta.

Perhaps Ford's pardoning of Richard Nixon was an influencing factor or it might simply have been that he did not meet the criteria. The two Presidents who served before Roosevelt and after 'Time' magazine began in 1923, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover, were never named 'Man of the Year'.
6. The North American edition of 'Time' is published out of its main headquarters in New York City, but the magazine publishes seperate editions from three other world locations. Which of the following is *not* one of the places that produces a regional version of 'Time'?

Answer: Mumbai

'Time Europe', originally known as 'Time Atlantic', publishes out of London and is available throughout Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Hong Kong publishes an Asian orientated edition named 'Time Asia' and the magazine published in Sydney covers Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific Island nations.
7. A special version of 'Time' designed for a younger audience can be found in many school classrooms and libraries throughout the USA. What is this magazine known as?

Answer: Time For Kids

Written by kids and for kids, 'Time For Kids', like its parent magazine, is published weekly. Rarely exceeding more than eight pages in length, it features news stories, pop-culture articles and a 'Cartoon of the Week'. In addition to the weekly publication, 'Time' also produces the 'Time For Kids Almanac' on an annual basis.

This is used as a reference guide and covers a wide range of news stories from the year as well as offering possible headlines for the year that follows.
8. In 1999 'Time' moved with the times and their 'Man of the Year' honour became the 'Person of the Year'. But how many individual women, not including female members of a larger group of people, were named 'Man of the Year' before this occurred?

Answer: 4

In chronological order they were Wallis Simpson in 1936, former first lady of the Republic of China Soong May-ling in 1937, Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 and former President of the Philippines Corazon Aquino in 1986. Although Soong May-ling's husband Chiang Kai-shek was also 'Man of the Year' in 1937, her award is still considered by 'Time' to be an individual honour.

The first 'Person of the Year' in 1999 was Jeffrey P. Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com.
9. 'Time' is easily recognised by the red border that adorns the front cover of each issue, but which event inspired a special edition with a black border replacing the red?

Answer: September 11 terrorist attacks

This particular edition of 'Time' was a special rushed edition and was published outside of their usual release day. The entire issue was dedicated to the terrorist attacks of 11th September 2001 and the use of the black coloured border was a symbol of a nation mourning.

The red border was replaced with a green one in April 2008 for the 'Earth Day' issue which was dedicated to issues concerning the environment.
10. Some choices for 'Person of the Year' have been met with scepticism throughout its history. Mixed reactions followed the announcement of the 2006 recipient of this award. Do you remember who it was?

Answer: You

Very well done to you, give yourself a pat on the back. Whether this was just a token gesture or a heartfelt acknowledgement who can say? A sales slump in 'Time' the following year would suggest that the public didn't buy it though. From the beginning of the 21st century right up to 2006, 'Time' enjoyed a steady circulation figure of around 4 million copies per week.

In 2007 this figure dropped dramatically to 3.4 million.
