Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. State of Alabama Title 32 (The Motor Vehicle Law Title) requires the state trooper, police officer, or deputy sheriff to "lock" your speed reading on the radar unit and allow you to view it if you request.

Answer: False

There is no code section in the Alabama Motor Vehicle Law that mandates the officer "lock" the speed reading. In fact, some radar units are not equipped with a separate window that shows the locked speed (instead using the target window), thus the officer can not complete the required tracking history when he locks the speed in.

A tracking history is a procedure the officer follows to ensure that the vehicle he suspects is exceeding the posted speed limit is the vehicle the radar is actually returning a speed for in the target window.
2. Alabama Motor Vehicle Law provides that when a violator attempts to elude an officer under certain circumstances that attempt to elude becomes a felony offense.

Answer: False

The legislature has for years attempted to rectify this and pass a felony attempt to elude law, but has not yet passed this legislation. It should be noted that all surrounding states of Alabama do in fact have a felony attempt to elude law in effect.
3. If you are stopped for a violation and the state trooper does not have his "Smokey Bear Hat" on, he is unable to issue a ticket.

Answer: False

This is an urban legend that I believe started with truck drivers. Alabama State Troopers can enforce the law regardless of their attire.
4. According to Alabama Motor Vehicle Law, specifically Title 32-5B-4 (the seat belt law), which occupants are NOT required to wear seatbelts?

Answer: All of these are exempt

Also, passengers in vehicles normally driven in reverse, a driver or passenger actively delivering newspapers from house to house, and people who have a medical waiver from a licensed medical doctor.
5. It is against Alabama Motor Vehicle Law to fail to stop at a flashing red light.

Answer: True

Believe it or not, some people do not know that red always means stop, even if it is flashing.
6. Under Alabama Motor Vehicle Law, the operator of an authorized emergency vehicle does not have to obey traffic laws while their emergency lights and siren are activated.

Answer: Yes, but they are required to exercise "Due regard for safety".

As the correct answer states, the operator may disregard the traffic laws, as long as he does so with due regard for safety of lives and property.
7. Under Alabama Motor Vehicle Law, it is a violation to make a right turn on a red signal.

Answer: False

You may make a right turn on red, unless there is a sign stating it is prohibited, as long as you come to a complete stop and make sure it is clear before you proceed.
8. Only on a two lane road are you required to pull off the roadway to the right, or stop if unable to safely leave the road, if an authorized emergency vehicle with emergency lights and siren activated approaches from the rear.

Answer: False

You must always, regardless of the road type, move to the right or if unable to do so, stop to allow the emergency vehicle to pass.
9. In a wet county and as long as the driver is not drinking, a passenger may consume alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle in operation on the roadway.

Answer: False

Alabama has an open container law. It outlaws any opened containers of alcohol in the passenger compartment, including wet counties.
10. When you sign a traffic citation, your signature means that you agree with the ticket, and you are guilty of the violation.

Answer: False

It only means that you promise to appear in court on the listed court date, or otherwise comply with the instructions on the back of the citation. It in no way implies guilt or agreement with the complaint.
