Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

From the adoption of the American Constitution until 2023, 45 individuals have served as president of the US, serving a total of 59 terms. Twelve of them were born in October and November and among them are three presidents who did not finish their first term in office.

Here are some interesting facts about these 12 presidents.

John Adams (1797 - 1801) was the first president to reside in the White House and was one of two presidents to sign the Declaration of Independence.

During James K. Polk's administration, 1845-1849, dancing, card-playing, and alcoholic beverages were banned from the White House, because his wife was a devout Presbyterian.

The election of President Zachary Taylor (1849-1850) was the first held on the same day in every state. Taylor passed away 16 months after his inauguration, at the age of 65, officially from cholera morbus.

Franklin Pierce (1853-1857) was the first president to have a Christmas tree in the White House and during his term, he installed the first central heating system in the building. Pierce was the first president who had no prior elected office experience.

During the administration of Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881), the first White House telephone was installed, by Alexander Graham Bell himself. James A. Garfield, who succeeded Rutherford, gave his campaign speeches in English and German and was reported to be able to write Latin with one hand and Greek with the other, at the same time. Garfield (1881-1881) suffered an assassination attempt and died probably due to infection as doctors tried to locate the bullet that hit him, using non-sterilized instruments. He died after 6 months and 15 days into term, 79 days after being shot. He was replaced by Chester A. Arthur (1881 -1885), nicknamed "Elegant Arthur", who hired the famous decorator and artist Louis Comfort Tiffany to redecorate and furnish the White House. These three individuals occupied the chair of the president in 1881, successively.

Theodore Roosevelt (1901- 1909), who was vice president, assumed the presidency, at the age of 42, after the assassination of President William McKinley. He was at that time the youngest person to assume the presidency, the first to ride an airplane and a submarine, and the first one to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Warren G. Harding (1921-1923) was the first newspaper publisher to be elected president, the first to speak over the radio airwaves, to visit Canada and Alaska. He was elected on his 55th birthday, November 2, 1920. Harding began to feel unwell on July 27, 1923, and passed away on August 2, 1923, two years, 4 months, and 29 days into his term.

Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-1961) was the only president to serve in both World War I and World War II, was the first one to give a televised news conference, and started the tradition of the president taking helicopter rides from the White House lawn.

Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and was the first president born in a hospital, as well as the first one to host an official papal visit (Pope John Paul II visited the White House in 1979).

At the time of his election, Joe Biden (Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr.), (1921 -) was the oldest sitting president (78 years on Inauguration day). He had 36 years of Senate experience, and was the first president to have a woman as vice president (Kamala Harris).
