Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which state would you find Winona State, Bemidji State, and St. Cloud State?

Answer: Minnesota

Wazoo is the mascot of the Winona State Warriors on their campus overlooking the Mississippi River, which also flows by St. Cloud State, home of the Huskies. Bemidji State is located in their state's vast northern woods on the shores of one of Minnesota's ten thousand lakes.

Naturally, their sports teams are the Beavers. Although all three schools compete in NCAA Division II for most sports, the Huskies and Beavers both compete in Division I in men's and women's ice hockey. Each of these schools bear the name of the towns in which their campuses are situated.
2. To which state would you travel to see a conference basketball matchup between Morehead State and Murray State?

Answer: Kentucky

The Eagles of Morehead State and the Racers of Murray State compete in the Ohio Valley Conference, and both have made several appearances in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, where Morehead State upset Louisville in 2011 and Murray State downed Vanderbilt in 2010. Murray State's baseball team is known as the Thoroughbreds. Both schools are named after the cities where their campuses are located.
3. In which state would one find Delta State, Alcorn State, and Jackson State?

Answer: Mississippi

While Jackson State is indeed located in the Mississippi state capital of Jackson, Delta State is in Cleveland, MS, and Alcorn State is in Lorman. Alcorn State was named for James L. Alcorn, who was Mississippi's governor in 1871 when the school's name was changed from Oakland College, which was a defunct college at the site. Delta State is located on the Mississippi River flood plain, 115 miles south of Memphis, TN and 300 miles north of New Orleans.
4. We're going to drop down to some colleges for this question, all three of which bear the names of their (admittedly small) city locations. Where are Chadron State College, Peru State College, and Wayne State College?

Answer: Nebraska

Peru and Wayne are both on the eastern side of the state, 66 miles south and 104 miles north of Omaha, respectively. Chadron is a little over 400 miles west of Omaha. Peru State was originally founded in 1865, and is Nebraska's oldest college. Wayne State opened as the Nebraska Normal College in 1891. Chadron State is in the Nebraska Panhandle and was founded in 1909.
5. Although Bowling Green State is located in Bowling Green, and Kent State is located in Kent, Wright State's campus is in Fairborn. Which state are these three universities in?

Answer: Ohio

Of course, Kent State is well known for the 1970 incident which gave rise to the song "Ohio" written by Neil Young and sung by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. Kent State also has campuses in seven other Ohio cities. The Golden Flashes, along with the Falcons of BGSU, are members of the Mid-American Conference. Fairborn is just outside of Dayton, and Wright State's name is in honor of the Wright Brothers. WSU's athletic teams are the Raiders and are members of the Horizon League.
6. In which state are Appalachian State University, Elizabeth State University, and Fayetteville State University?

Answer: North Carolina

Located in Boone, North Carolina, Appalachian State gained national attention in 2007 when the Mountaineers defeated Michigan in the Big House, 34-32. However, ASU won three consecutive national FCS football titles from 2005 to 2007. Appalachian State was founded in 1899 as a teacher-training institution. Both ECSU and FSU are "historically black colleges" located in Elizabeth City and Fayetteville.
7. In which state would a prospective student be traveling to visit Wayne State University, as well as Grand Valley State and Ferris State?

Answer: Michigan

Wayne State University, not to be confused with Wayne State College, is located in Detroit. Grand Valley State is in Allendale, and Ferris State is in Big Rapids. The Wayne State Warriors have won seven national titles in Men's Fencing and three national championships in Women's Fencing, all since 1975.

In 2012 the Ferris State Bulldogs placed second to Boston College in the NCAA Frozen Four ice hockey national title game. Between 2002 and 2006, GVSU's Lakers won four NCAA Division II national titles in football.
8. If a person was headed for visits at Valdosta State, Albany State, and Columbus State, all located in cities of the same name, to which state would he go?

Answer: Georgia

The Valdosta State Blazers have won three national football titles, a national baseball championship, and two national tennis titles, and the Lady Blazers won the 2012 national softball title. As a result of their many championships, in 2008 ESPN designated the city of Valdosta "Title Town USA". Albany State was founded in 1903 and first became supported by the State of Georgia in 1917, although it only gained four-year status in 1943, when its name was changed to Albany State University.

The CSU Cougars are in NCAA Division II and have won six national golf titles and competed in the Div. II College World Series seven times, winning it all in 2002.
9. McNeese State, Grambling State, and Nicholls State are all to be found in which U.S. state?

Answer: Louisiana

Grambling State gained national attention with its football coach for 57 years, Eddie Robinson, whose 408 wins is the highest among Division I coaches and trails only St. John's (Minnesota) John Gagliardi, at 471 (Division III), as of 2013. Grambling made news in 2013 when the football players voted not to play a scheduled game at Jackson State because of the disarray of the football program in particular and the financial straits of the entire athletic department in general.
10. Coppin State U. and Morgan State U. are both located in this state's largest city, while Bowie State and Frostburg State are located in Bowie and Frostburg, respectively. What state is this?

Answer: Maryland

Wikipedia refers to Bowie State, Coppin State and Morgan State, the latter two located in Baltimore, as "historically black institutions (HBI)". CSU's athletes are Eagles and MSU's are Bears. According to its official website, Bowie State, founded in 1865, is Maryland's oldest HBI, and one of the oldest in the USA.

Their mascot is the Bulldogs. Frostburg State began as a normal school in 1898 and its mascot is the Bobcats.
