Question 1 of 10
1. The Challenge: Hey there, you with the "morning in America" message, I'm onto you! You may be the "Great Communicator", but I'll use my Minnesota background and my experience as Vice President to unseat you in 1984!

Who am I?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The Challenge: Hey there Herbert Hoover, look at you - after four years of Presidency, you just know the country's looking for a change. I'll race you in 1932 and beat you fair and square with my background as Governor of New York.

Who am I?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The Challenge: I don't like Ike, and even though you beat me in 1952, I have a good feeling about 1956. I challenge you to a rematch, Mr. Eisenhower!

Who am I?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The Challenge: You're not all that, Mr. President! While I don't agree that so many states should have seceded when you became president, I don't think you're doing a good job. Your military strategies certainly don't agree with mine, and I think we need a more military hand at the reins of government. Like me! I still can't believe you fired me as leader of the Union forces...

Who am I?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. The Challenge: How exciting, no incumbent this year! But you are the current Vice President, which makes you the "staler" choice than me. I'm exciting, photogenic, and young - up on a television screen, I'm going to seem like the better candidate for sure next to you. In fact, I challenge you to the first-ever televised debates!

Who am I?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The Challenge: Read your lips? Well when I read your lips I see a one-term president! Watch out because in 1992, I, "The Man From Hope", will take you down!

Who am I?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The Challenge: You may have defeated me in 1888, Harrison, but I'm back for 1892 and ready to be President again. Oh yeah, I'm going to get this second term, not you, even if it's not a typical style to do the non-consecutive thing.

Who am I?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The Challenge: It's rematch time for the century - 1900 is my year, I can just feel it. Even though you defeated me in 1896, this time I'm back for you. I got a lot of mileage out of my "Cross of Gold" speech, I can still use that, right?

Who am I?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. The Challenge: Hey, Mr. Atom Bomb, you may have helped end World War II but I'm coming for you anyway this year. When the dust settles you can bet that newspapers will declare that I defeated you!

Who am I?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The Challenge: Just because five Supreme Court justices put you over the top in 2000 doesn't mean you won't have quite the fight on your hands in 2004. I served in Vietnam instead of dodging the draft, and have a long-standing Senate career.

Who am I?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Challenge: Hey there, you with the "morning in America" message, I'm onto you! You may be the "Great Communicator", but I'll use my Minnesota background and my experience as Vice President to unseat you in 1984! Who am I?

Answer: Walter Mondale

Walter Mondale was Jimmy Carter's Vice President during his one term, and then ran against Ronald Reagan (the "Great Communicator" whose campaign ad famously proclaimed that it was "morning in America") in 1984. Ronald Reagan handily won re-election, with Mondale taking *only his home state*. It was not a close election in 1984.
2. The Challenge: Hey there Herbert Hoover, look at you - after four years of Presidency, you just know the country's looking for a change. I'll race you in 1932 and beat you fair and square with my background as Governor of New York. Who am I?

Answer: Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Herbert Hoover was president from 1929 to 1933, the 1932 election was a sweeping win for FDR, as the Great Depression had set in during Hoover's term. Hoover was largely blamed and FDR crushed Hoover as a consequence of this. Al Smith, one of the incorrect choices, was Hoover's first challenger in 1928 when he won the presidency.
3. The Challenge: I don't like Ike, and even though you beat me in 1952, I have a good feeling about 1956. I challenge you to a rematch, Mr. Eisenhower! Who am I?

Answer: Adlai Stevenson

Adlai Stevenson ran against Dwight Eisenhower twice, both in 1952 and 1956, and lost both times. Though he did not lose as often as one of the wrong answers on this list: William Jennings Bryan was a nominee for president three times and never won.
Who am I?

Answer: George McClellan

Abraham Lincoln was challenged by one of his former generals, George McClellan, with whom he'd had several military disagreements. McClellan was so slow to fight that Lincoln allegedly quipped that "if McClellan wasn't using the army" that he'd like to "borrow it" for a while. Oh Lincoln. McClellan was unable to unseat the sitting president, though, and Lincoln was elected to a depressingly short term, cut off by the assassin John Wilkes Booth.
Who am I?

Answer: John F. Kennedy

Richard Nixon was Eisenhower's Vice President, but could not fend off the challenge from John F. Kennedy in 1960. One classic story from the campaign is that the televised debate came off wildly differently if you just heard the debate versus if you saw it. Those who heard the debate thought that Nixon had won, but those who saw it thought that Kennedy had prevailed.
6. The Challenge: Read your lips? Well when I read your lips I see a one-term president! Watch out because in 1992, I, "The Man From Hope", will take you down! Who am I?

Answer: Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton was from Hope, Arkansas and used the moniker "The Man From Hope" in the 1992 election where he defeated one-term incumbent George H. W. Bush.
7. The Challenge: You may have defeated me in 1888, Harrison, but I'm back for 1892 and ready to be President again. Oh yeah, I'm going to get this second term, not you, even if it's not a typical style to do the non-consecutive thing. Who am I?

Answer: Grover Cleveland

Grover Cleveland was first elected president in 1884, but then was defeated by Benjamin Harrison in the 1888 election. However, Cleveland came back and won to become the as-of-2012 only president to ever serve non-consecutive terms.
8. The Challenge: It's rematch time for the century - 1900 is my year, I can just feel it. Even though you defeated me in 1896, this time I'm back for you. I got a lot of mileage out of my "Cross of Gold" speech, I can still use that, right? Who am I?

Answer: William Jennings Bryan

William Jennings Bryan lost to William McKinley in both the 1896 and 1900 elections, not quite able to translate his populist following into an electoral victory either time. He would later lose to William Howard Taft in 1908 as well.
9. The Challenge: Hey, Mr. Atom Bomb, you may have helped end World War II but I'm coming for you anyway this year. When the dust settles you can bet that newspapers will declare that I defeated you! Who am I?

Answer: Thomas Dewey

Thomas Dewey challenged Harry S Truman in 1948 and the race was famously close, with newspapers even declaring Dewey the winner before the ballots had actually come in to show that Truman had won. A famous picture exists of Truman triumphantly holding a newspaper with the blaring headline "Dewey Defeats Truman".
10. The Challenge: Just because five Supreme Court justices put you over the top in 2000 doesn't mean you won't have quite the fight on your hands in 2004. I served in Vietnam instead of dodging the draft, and have a long-standing Senate career. Who am I?

Answer: John Kerry

John Kerry challenged President George W. Bush in 2004, and while the election was close he was unable to defeat him. John Kerry is still a Senator for the state of Massachusetts as of 2012.
