Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Nine of the fifteen red flags contain red, white and blue only.
Chile:
Czechia
Cuba
The Netherlands, Russia
New Zealand
Norway
Panama
Thailand
Czechia has a horizontal bicolour of white over red with a blue triangle on the hoist side. Cuba has a red triangle in the hoist with a white central and with a field of alternating blue and white stripes. Chile also has a white star but in a blue canton with a white-on-red horizontal bicolour similar to Czechia.
New Zealand and Australia have similar flags: Both have a Union Jack in the canton on a blue field. New Zealand's Southern Cross has four red stars edged in white.
Norway has a blue Scandinavian cross, edged in white, on a red background.
Panama has a distinctive flag of four quadrants of blue, red and two white with the red and blue quadrants diagonally opposite each other. Each white quadrant has either a central blue or red star.
Thailand has a five horizontal-banded flag of red-white-blue-white-red with the blue band being twice as wide as the other four.
A further three flags have just two colours: Red and white.
Canada, with two vertical red bands astride a central white band containing a red maple leaf.
Poland has a horizontal bicolour of white over red.
Switzerland is only one of two flags, along with the Vatican City flag, that is square. It has a white cross on a red background (which is opposite to the Red Cross flag)
The Moroccan flag has perhaps the highest red proportion of any national flag as it contains only a green outline of a pentagram on an otherwise all-red field. The pentagram represents the Seal of Solomon, which is an Islamic symbol. with its five branches representing the pillars of Islam.
Liechtenstein has a horizontal bi-colour flag of blue over red. A gold crown was added after the 1936 Olympics when it was discovered it had the same flag as Haiti. The gold crown indicates the country's status as a principality
South Africa is perhaps one of the more complex flags and would be surprising if it did NOT contain red as it contains six colours (Red, white, blue, yellow, green and black) in a complex Y- Y-shaped field.
Of the nine flags that contain no red, Jamaica is the only country in the world that does not contain at least one colour of red, white or blue. It has a yellow saltire (diagonal cross) on a green and black background.
The flags of Finland, Greece, Israel and Somalia have colours of blue and white only.
Somalia's is markedly different as its blue colour is a lighter blue, similar to the United Nations flag whereas the other three use the more 'traditional' dark blue. Somali's flag is simply a single central white five-pointed star representing the five regions in which Somalis live within the Horn of Africa. Finland has a wide blue Scandinavian flag on a white field. Greece has alternating blue and white stripes with a blue cross in the canton. Israel's flag has a blue Star of David centrally located on a white field with two thin blue stripes near the top and bottom of the flag.
The flags of Argentina and Uruguay are similar: blue and white stripes with an additional gold sun symbol, albeit in different positions.
Sweden is unique in the four Scandinavian counties in that its off-centre cross is yellow. It has a blue field.
The flag of Brazil is unique among national flags in that it is the only flag that has a colour combination of blue, white, green and yellow. Its depictions of a circular night sky and yellow lozenge are also unique.
