In a coup on August 3rd 1979, Teodoro Mbasogo forcibly removed President Francisco Macías Nguema from power, officially taking office as President on October 10th 1979.

The position was one of his various jobs during the presidency of Francisco Macías Nguema. During Francisco Macías Nguema's presidency, he was also the head of the Black Beach Prison, and leader of the National Guard. Bioko is a small island in the Gulf of Guinea, 779 square miles in area, and is also very mountainous.

Its highest point is a volcano, Pico Basilé, which rises to 9,878 feet above sea level. Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, is located on Bioko and is also the largest city in Equatorial Guinea, and the largest on the island.
