Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt were related in what way?

Answer: 5th cousins

Theodore was of the Oyster Bay branch of the family, while Franklin was of the Hyde Park branch. They are both descendants of the 17th century immigrant to New Amsterdam, Claes Maartenszen van Rosenvelt. Roosevelt means "rose field".
2. Theodore Roosevelt was born in Upstate New York.

Answer: False

He was born on E. 20th Street in New York City. He was the first US president to be born in a city.
3. How many siblings did Theodore Roosevelt have?

Answer: Three

He was the second of four children. He had an elder sister, "Bamie" (Anna), and a younger brother and sister, Elliott and Corrine.
4. Theodore served as Governor of New York before becoming president.

Answer: True

He was the state's 33rd governor, from 1899-1901.
5. How many terms did Theodore Roosevelt serve as president?

Answer: 2

Although he did run for a 3rd term, even creating his own "Bull Moose Party", the election was won by Woodrow Wilson. No president has ever served four complete terms, and the 22nd Amendment now limits presidents to only two terms.
6. Theodore Roosevelt was elected president for the first time in 1901.

Answer: False

He was not elected. He was serving as Vice President when President McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo. He therefore took over as President.
7. Franklin D. Roosevelt married Eleanor Roosevelt. How was she related to Theodore?

Answer: Niece

Anna Eleanor was the eldest child of Theodore Roosevelt's only brother, Elliott. That means Eleanor and Franklin were 5th cousins once removed.
8. How many siblings did Franklin D. Roosevelt have?

Answer: 1

This is a bit of a trick question. Although he was the only child of his parents, he did have an older half-brother, from his father's first wife. James "Rosy" Roosevelt was 28 years older than Franklin.
9. Theodore Roosevelt was a president of many "firsts". Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: He was the first president to marry while in office

Theodore married twice, both times before he became president. He was the first to own a car, and invited Booker T. Washington to dinner. The first president to marry while in the White House was Grover Cleveland, and as of 2023 no other president has done so.
10. In which city were Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt married?

Answer: New York City

They were married in New York City. President Theodore Roosevelt gave his niece away, as she was an orphan. True to his personality, the president was the center of the festivities, while the bride and groom were largely overlooked.
11. Were Theodore and Franklin part of the same political party?

Answer: No

Theodore was a Republican, while Franklin was a Democrat. Theodore's branch of the family were not supporters of FDR because of this; in fact they vehemently opposed him. They were very staunch Republicans.
12. Did Franklin Roosevelt serve as Governor of New York?

Answer: Yes

He served as the 44th Governor from 1928 until he was elected president in 1932. As noted in a previous question, Theodore had previously served as the 33rd Governor.
13. How many full terms as President did Franklin D Roosevelt serve?

Answer: 3

Although he was elected to an unprecedented fourth term, he served only 82 days before he died. He was the only president to be elected four times, as the two-term limit was introduced as a result.
14. Both Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt survived assassination attempts.

Answer: True

Theodore was shot during a speech while campaigning for a third term - and carried on speaking! Franklin was shot at before his first inauguration. He was unharmed. It was unsure whether he was the shooter's intended target.
15. Which Roosevelt died while in office?

Answer: Franklin

Theodore died in 1919, ten years after leaving the White House. Franklin died in 1945, shortly into his 4th term.
