Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy one first. There are two branches of this organisation, the forerunner of which was founded by Henri Dunant in 1863, in the district. Some of the activities carried out by this group are managing the Blood Transfusion Service, disaster relief and First Aid training. What is the name of this organisation ?

Answer: Australian Red Cross

In our town, Red Cross members primarily fundraise to support the state based activities. One Red Cross activity is Telecross, where housebound people receive a daily phone call to check on their wellbeing.
2. This organisation is the largest non-religious volunteer group in the world. The motto of this group is "We Serve". What group am I referring to ?

Answer: Lions Club International

Women's Institute is not usually found in Australia. Neither its Australian counterpart, CWA, or Apex meet the criteria of worlds largest non-religious volunteer organisation.
3. Being a rural district, our town has many horse-based sporting groups. One sport is similar to polo, but with a major difference. Which is it?

Answer: Polocrosse

Polocrosse supposedly came to Australia in 1938. It varies from polo in that a net similar to that used in lacrosse is used instead of a mallet. There are two polocrosse clubs in our district and over the years, there has been fierce but friendly rivalry between the two clubs.
4. Two youth-based organisations are currently in recess in our town, due to scarcity of leaders. These organisations were founded by Robert Baden Powell and his sister in the early 1900s. What organisations am I referring to?

Answer: Scouts & Guides

At various times, our town has had Brownies and Guides, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers, and participants have travelled all over Australia to take part in camps and jamborees.
5. Our district has two CWA groups. For what do the letters CWA stand?

Answer: Country Women's Association

The CWA was started in Australia in 1922, and at one stage had buildings in almost every country town. CWA is much more than tea and scones; CWA has reasonably priced holiday accommodation in many seaside towns, arranges visits to country women hospitalised in major cities, runs youth leadership projects and many other community based activities.
6. We have four Service Clubs in our town. Which of the following is specifically intended for retirees?

Answer: Probus

Retirees may be members of Lions and Rotary, but Probus is the only group in town specifically intended for retirees. The Apex Club accepts members from 18 to 45, which generally precludes retirees.
7. We have several churches in our town, including Roman Catholic, Anglican, Uniting Church and Baptist. The Uniting Church of Australia was founded in 1977, when three churches amalgamated. Which of the following demoninations was not one of those that took part in the union?

Answer: Seventh Day Adventist

The Uniting Church in Australia not only functions as a religious organisation, but runs aged care facilities and welfare organisations.
8. In almost every country town there is at least one football team. Given that my town is located in Western Australia, which is the most likely football code that is played?

Answer: Australian Rules (AFL)

Western Australia is second only to Victoria in its support of Australian Rules. With migrants from South Africa and New Zealand, there is a slowly increasing following for the rugby codes and for soccer, but AFL is still Number 1 here.
9. Both the local Ambulance Service and the Fire Brigade are run by volunteer members. In Western Australia, what is the name of the organisation that is responsible for ambulance services?

Answer: St John Ambulance Australia

St John Ambulance started in Western Australia in 1892, and outside cities and large towns, is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, who give many thousands of hours annually to serve their community.
10. Our community boasts many landcare and catchment groups and environmental organisations. Which of the following is unlikely to be among them?

Answer: Kimberley Toad Busters

While we in the Great Southern region of Western Australia sympathise with those fighting the advance of the cane toad into Western Australia, at this stage the cane toad is unlikely to advance this far south.

The "Red Card for the Red Fox" groups sponsor measures to try and control the numbers of foxes in the region. Foxes are an introduced pest and a menace to stock and small native marsupials.
