Answer: 1882

The franchise began with the name of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys in 1882, playing in the American Association. The team was later regrouped with the defunct Louisville Colonels. In 1891, they became the Pirates and finished in last place of 8 teams in the National League.
2. The Pirates won the first World Series in history in 1903?

Answer: False

Although they were in the first World Series in 1903, they lost to Boston 5 games to 3. The Pirates had won 3 consecutive National League pennants in 1903, under the management of Fred Clarke.
3. Who was the first Pittsburgh Pirate to be inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame?

Answer: Honus Wagner

Wagner was one of the first 5 inducted into the Hall in 1936. Known as "The Flying Dutchman", Wagner played his first 3 seasons with Louisville who closed their shop. He and many other players from Louisville joined the Pirates in 1900. Honus played another 18 season with Pittsburgh before retiring in 1917.

Moreno set a club record in 1978 by stealing 71 bases. The following season he broke his own mark by stealing 77 bags. Omar played for 8 seasons with the Pirates from 1975-1982.

Giles the left fielder, was in his 8th season in baseball and the 4th as a Pirate. Aramis Ramirez had the next highest total with 18.

Chesbro went 28-6 in 1902 with the Pirates. Two seasons later, he set a record for winning 41 games as a New York Highlander (later Yankees). This 20th century record stood firm. After playing only 11 seasons, Jack compiled an amazing record of 198-132. He retired in 1909.

Answer: 1979

These were all World Series seasons, and victorious ones for the Pirates. 1979 saw manager Chuck Tanner and his club, defeat the Orioles 4 games to 3. Three Rivers Stadium fans saw Willie Stargell blast 3 home runs, 4 doubles, 12 hits, and 7 RBI's, in the Series which 'Pops' was awarded the Series MVP Award. Stargell retired 3 seasons later, as the club leader in home runs with 475.
