Mark Lowry Trivia Questions

1. What was the name given to fans of Mark Lowry, who subscribe to his newsletter?

From Quiz
Do you know Mark (Lowry)?

Answer: reMarkables

In his concerts, Mark often makes comments addressed directly to his reMarkable fans and loves to hear from them. This is also the name of the great newsletter that is intended for these fans, that tells Mark's schedule and his latest accomplishments. Mark's website is full of references to this reMarkable fan base.

2. He was a comedian for a while before he got a surprise invitation to fill a spot in a quartet of famous Christian songwriter Bill Gaither. What was the name of the quartet?

From Quiz Mark Lowry Gets A Quiz About Him!

Answer: The Gaither Vocal Band

He became a big hit for the Gaithers, providing the comedy relief that the Homecoming videos love to have. He got the job despite the fact that he couldn't read music and knew none of those things that one should know about singing in a quartet, like "swelling."

3. Along with singing and telling funny jokes and stories, Mark has also written several children's books about an overactive mouse. In 2005 he released a special collection containing all four of this mouse's adventures. What was his name?

From Quiz Do you know Mark (Lowry)?

Answer: Piper

Mark has written four different stories telling the adventures of Piper the mouse. Piper is the first hyperactive mouse I've ever read about. His personality fits well with Mark and his own hyperactiveness. My favorite Piper story was "Piper's Night Before Christmas" where he learned the true joy of giving. Another story in this collection is "Piper's Twisted Tale", about the importance of telling the truth.

4. Mark Lowry jokes about wanting to sing a duet with a famous Christian singer who will not sing with him because of his many flawed character traits. He wrote a parody song about it. Who is this singer who may sing with him "Some Other Time?"

From Quiz Mark Lowry Gets A Quiz About Him!

Answer: Sandi Patty

This is a very funny performance to watch when he does it on stage. Sandi Patty does indeed sing with him on this song but is not on tour with him so he uses a wig to represent her by putting it on his head and acting out her part, putting it on his fist and holding the mic up to it and putting it on the mic stand. (He knocks her to the ground at one point and then holds the mic down to the wig on the floor when he finds it.)

5. Starting in 1988, Mark was offered the chance to sing baritone with what famous Christian singing group?

From Quiz Do you know Mark (Lowry)?

Answer: Gaither Vocal Band

This band was started by Bill Gaither in the early 1980s, with just four singers but has grown and evolved and become well-known by Christian music fans of all ages. Mark continued singing with the Gaither Band for 13 years and was enjoyed by audiences in many cities. Seven years after leaving this group, he rejoined them in January 2009.

6. During the song "Jesus on the Main Line" on the Gaither Vocal Band "I Do Believe" video, Mark Lowry holds something up to Bill Gaither's nose because Bill keeps his eyes closed while visualizing the notes of the song. What was the object?

From Quiz Mark Lowry Gets A Quiz About Him!

Answer: his shoe.

This act only got crazier as they continued to do it, even up to the point where Mark would stick his stinky foot up there under Bill's nose. Bill's such a great sport.

7. Mark also wrote some songs. He began writing the lyrics for a Christmas song in 1984. What is the name of this Christmas song, for which he is the most well known?

From Quiz Do you know Mark (Lowry)?

Answer: Mary, Did You Know?

"Mary, Did You Know?" is an amazing song full of questions that Mark would have asked Mary about Jesus, her blessed baby. The music for this beautiful song was written by Buddy Greene. The song has been performed, not only by Mark, but also by many other great singers, including Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd.

8. Mark is the middle child of three. What word did he use frequently in his concerts and on his albums to describe his older brother, Mike and his younger sister, Melissa?

From Quiz Do you know Mark (Lowry)?

Mark enjoyed telling stories about his family, including his two perfect siblings and their perfect families. He always compared himself and his knack for getting into trouble with his siblings, who were perfect and never caused any problems.

9. Why did Mark have difficulty in school when he was growing up?

From Quiz Do you know Mark (Lowry)?

Answer: He had ADHD.

Many kids are now being diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), but Mark had this before it was so common place. This disorder affects many people, causing problems with hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity. His hyperactivity was an on-going problem with his teachers in school. Having raised him, his parents were very supportive and understanding of his teachers and would never have undermined them. Even growing up, Mark knew that he would have to channel this hyperactivity into a positive direction, which made his career as a singer and comedian a great use of his God-given gifts.

10. For the song "Cool Water," Mark had just one word to sing during the song. What word did he need to sing?

From Quiz Mark Lowry Gets A Quiz About Him!

Answer: "Water"

He didn't originally want to do this bit, but Bill Gaither envisioned a funny bit coming out of this. It is one of the two most requested bits of Mark Lowry. He says, "Ice Cream" instead of "Water" at one point during the song and pretends to ride a donkey toward the end of it.

11. Most of Mark's tapes and CDs contain songs as well as comedy routines. What was the name of the first album he created, released in 1998, that was only songs?

From Quiz Do you know Mark (Lowry)?

Answer: But Seriously

Mark created the album "But Seriously" as a singing only project, at the request of his mama in 1998. This album, in particular, was dedicated to her. This was the first album that Mark recorded that did not contain any of his stories or comedy routines.

12. Mark Lowry does a radio talk show with a co-host where they discuss Christianity, philosophy etc. Who is this guest host of "Saturdays With Mark and Tony?"

Dr. Anthony Campolo is a pastor, a sociologist and a public speaker who has become the leader of a movement called "Red-Letter Christians." Dr. Tony Evans is a good preacher and has a ministry called "The Urban Alternative." Anthony Burger toured with Mark Lowry quite a bit, but he passed away on February 22, 2006, at the age of 44 while performing (not with Mark) aboard a cruise ship. There are a couple of Pastor Tony Smiths, one in Detroit, MI and the other in Baltimore, MD.

Answer: The Date Adventure

This spoof, on Mark's "Mouth in Motion" album (released in 1994), is all about the adventures of going on blind dates. He uses the song to poke fun at blind dates through humor. The other titles are some I'd like to see what Mark could do with.

15. One of the favorite Mark Lowry routines, requested by many fans, involves him putting on a wig and mimicking one of the great gospel singers during a song called "I'm Gonna Keep On." Who was the singer he imitated?

From Quiz Mark Lowry Gets A Quiz About Him!

Answer: Jake Hess

He did a very good impersonation of Jake. Jake was right there beside him during the routine, however he has since passed on.

16. Mark first began performing in churches of the denomination he was a member of when he was growing up. What kind of churches were these?

From Quiz Do you know Mark (Lowry)?

Answer: Baptist

Mark's comedy began in independent Baptist churches though, as he said in his albums, the denomination isn't as important as the simple fact that your heart belongs to Jesus. He has performed in many different denominations though he will never forget his Baptist upbringing. He joked during several of his concerts that you can always find the Baptists in the crowd because they are usually seated in the balcony or "on the shelf" as he put it. Mark and his family were very involved in their Baptist church and he joked that if the doors were open, they were there in "their" pew. Lowry's joined the "Greenwood Village Baptist Church" when Mark was eleven years old.

17. Mark Lowry left the Gaither Vocal Band to focus on his many other projects, including his comedy career. During which year did Mark leave the group?

From Quiz Mark Lowry Gets A Quiz About Him!

Answer: 2001

He found it difficult to keep up with his own career in addition to Bill Gaither's schedule. Now, in 2009, with the departure of Guy Penrod, who has decided to focus more on his solo career, Mark has rejoined the band.
