He played the role of Ben Braddock in "The Graduate" (1967), for which he won the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. In "The Graduate" Ben (Hoffman) was seduced by Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), She was the wife of Ben's father's business partner. Eventually Ben was expected to date Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross), Mrs. Robinson's daughter. This caused an upheaval along with plenty of jealousy. Despite Ben's efforts to make Elaine dislike him, he fell in love with her and she with him. Mrs. Robinson threatened to tell Elaine about the affair, which made Ben choose to tell Elaine himself. Learning of the affair between Ben and her mother, caused Elaine to break up with Ben. Eventually things were patched up and a happy ending for Ben and Elaine transpired. Hoffman also won the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year-Actor, for his role in "The Graduate". Soon after, he starred as another drunk, this time alongside Liza Minnelli and Sir John Gielgud in "Arthur" (1981), that proved to be a huge hit. Later in life he appeared in public with a slurred voice and unsteady gait, which people quickly mistook for drunkenness. It was, in fact, the beginnings of a degenerative brain disease and palsy, which led to his death in 2002.
