Circus Series Trivia Questions

1. At the beginning of "Circus Days Again", Madame Prunella joins the circus; what is her act?

From Quiz
Circus Days Again

Answer: Talking parrots

Madame Prunella's parrots are very well trained, especially Gringle, the star of the show. Oona the acrobat is Madame Prunella's cousin, and he and Jimmy persuade her to join Mr. Galliano's rather than another circus.

2. Lotta now lives with the Browns, as her parents Lal and Laddo have gone to join a European circus for six months. The new horse riding act at the circus features Juanita, Pepita, and who else?

From Quiz Hurrah for the Circus!

Answer: Lou

Juanita, Pepita, and Lou are two sisters and a brother. They have a wonderful act with their beautiful horses. There is just one downside; they don't need Lotta in their act, so she no longer goes into the ring in her beautiful silver frock. Early editions of "Mr. Galliano's Circus", the previous book in this trilogy, say that Lal and Laddo have left Lotta behind "'Because they are going to Austria for six months to join Lal's brother there,' said Lotta. 'He is running a circus at Budapest, Lal says - and will pay them well if they go.'" In later editions, this mistake has been corrected and Hungary substituted for Austria.

3. The first person Jimmy meets from the circus is Lotta. What act does she do in the ring with her parents Lal and Laddo?

From Quiz Mr. Galliano's Circus

Answer: Horse riding

Lal and Laddo have a string of beautiful horses that they ride in the ring. Lotta is part of the act; she has been riding since before she could walk, and can do all kinds of marvellous tricks.

4. Madame Prunella's caravan disappears during the storm. Where has it gone?

From Quiz Circus Days Again

Answer: The Big Top blew away and landed on it, completely covering it up

Everyone thinks Madame Prunella must have left the circus secretly in the night, until the children hear her parrots squawking and talking. They realise the Big Top has landed right on top of her caravan; Madame Prunella is stuck, and has no idea what has happened.

5. Early in the story of "Hurrah for the Circus!", an exciting new act joins the troupe; Roma and Fric and their trained tigers! At which place do they join up with the circus?

From Quiz Hurrah for the Circus!

Answer: Liverpool

Roma and his nephew Fric keep the tigers, and Jimmy is appalled to learn they train them by fear rather than with love and kindness. Considering when "Hurrah for the Circus!" was first published, in 1939, some of the characters have a very modern viewpoint; Jimmy, Lilliput, and Mr. Wally all say that tigers shouldn't be in the circus - some animals enjoy performing and are easy to train, and some animals will never enjoy it, and shouldn't be there.

6. Who is the circus employee who runs away with all the takings?

From Quiz Mr. Galliano's Circus

Answer: Harry the oddjob man

Harry is the carpenter and handyman for the circus. When he runs away he takes all the money, so nobody can be paid, and also leaves the circus in the lurch with lots of repairs that need to be done.

7. Among the new acts joining Mr. Galliano's circus are three clowns. Identical twins Twinkle and Pippi are friendly and full of fun, but the third new clown is gloomy and short tempered. Who is he?

From Quiz Circus Days Again

Answer: Google

Google and his dog Squib are the last of the new circus folk to arrive at the campsite that day. Squib is the only thing in the world that Google really cares for, and he hates children!

8. Jimmy makes friends with the tigers, and likes the fiercest one best. What is her name?

From Quiz Hurrah for the Circus!

Answer: Queenie

Everyone is amazed at how well Jimmy gets on with the tigers. They like him because he is kind and gentle towards them, not cruel and harsh like Roma and Fric.

9. How is it that Jimmy and his parents get to go with the circus when it moves on from his home town?

From Quiz Mr. Galliano's Circus

Answer: His father gets a job as a carpenter

Jimmy's father is a skilled carpenter who has been out of work for a long time. When Harry runs away, Jimmy's father gets his job, and Jimmy and his mother go too. Mr. Galliano lets them use an old caravan so they can travel along with the circus.

10. Neptune the performing seal plays a tune with his nose on hanging bells. What tune does he play?

From Quiz Circus Days Again

Answer: Jack and Jill Went up the Hill

11. How does Jimmy get the keys for the tiger's cage?

From Quiz Hurrah for the Circus!

Answer: Bribes Fric to leave them out where he can get them

Jimmy desperately wants to go into the cage with the tigers, but is forbidden. He makes friends with Fric and gives him ice creams, sweets, and toys until Fric agrees to help. Fric leaves the keys just inside an open window of the caravan at night, and Jimmy reaches in and borrows them.

12. What does Mrs. Brown cook over a fire, for the family's evening meal, after their first day travelling with the circus?

From Quiz Mr. Galliano's Circus

Mrs. Brown has never lit a camp fire before, and in the end Lotta has to help her get it going. They have herrings, bread and butter, and hot cocoa, and really feel like 'proper circus folk'.

13. Mr. Galliano has to leave the circus in the charge of Britomart the conjurer. Why is this?

From Quiz Circus Days Again

Answer: Mrs. Galliano must go to hospital and he goes with her

Mrs. Galliano needs an operation, and then must go to the seaside to convalesce. Mr. Galliano will not let her go alone, so he puts Britomart in charge of his circus while he is away. Galliano thinks this will be all right as Britomart once ran a circus of his own, but things go very wrong...

14. Fric is being mean to Lotta, and chases an animal away from her. The animal then runs into the tigers' cage. Which animal is it?

From Quiz Hurrah for the Circus!

Answer: Jemima

Jemima is Lilliput's favourite monkey; he treats her like a child. When Lilliput is ill, Lotta is taking care of Jemima, and Fric snatches her away to "pay Lotta back" for threatening to tell Roma and Mr. Galliano about the keys to the tiger's cage.

15. Jimmy and Lotta rescue a little dog from her cruel owners; what is her name?

From Quiz Mr. Galliano's Circus

Answer: Lulu

Little black spaniel Lulu is devoted to Jimmy and Lotta after they rescue her from Jan and Yol, the Marvel Brothers trapeze artistes.

16. "Britomart thinks he's smart. But he's got a ______" Do you remember what came next?

From Quiz Circus Days Again

Answer: Stony heart

Madame Prunella teaches Gringle the parrot to sing the rhyme, and when she gets him to do it in the ring, Britomart is incensed. He has upset just about every person in the circus with his hard manner and harsh words, and this just makes him even harsher.

17. Who goes into the cage to calm the tigers while the animal is rescued?

From Quiz Hurrah for the Circus!

Answer: Jimmy

Because Jimmy has made friends with the tigers he is able to calm Queenie so that Jemima can be gotten out of the cage with a long handled net. It all comes out about Jimmy going into the cage secretly, and Fric gets into terrible trouble with Roma and Mr. Galliano.

18. Many of the circus folk decide to leave because they can't bear to work with Britomart any longer. Which act cannot leave as they have "signed a paper" promising to stay for a year?

From Quiz Circus Days Again

Answer: Lal and Laddo

Lotta is heartbroken when she realises that she will have to stay behind with her parents when all her friends leave. Even Jimmy hands in his notice to leave at the end of the current run. Lotta's despair is made worse because of the behaviour of Jeanne and Lisa.

19. Why do the tigers leave Mr. Galliano's circus?

From Quiz Hurrah for the Circus!

Answer: They move to Mr. Briggs' circus

The tigers leave to join Mr. Briggs' circus. Mr. Galliano is not sorry to see them go as he has come to realise that pulling in the crowds is not as important as having animals who are happy and enjoy performing in the show. When the tigers leave, Jimmy discovers that Lucky has gone missing. It looks very much as if Fric has stolen her to pay back Jimmy for the trouble he got into over letting him into the tiger cage.

20. When Lal buys Jimmy a dog of his own, who do they buy it from?

From Quiz Mr. Galliano's Circus

Answer: Mr. Jiggs

Jimmy nurses one of Lal's performing dogs back to health when everyone else has given up on it, and Lal says she will buy Jimmy a pup of his very own to train. They visit Mr. Jiggs and Jimmy chooses Lucky. Oddly, Lucky is a boy in some of the "Mr. Galliano" stories and a girl in others!

21. Jeanne and Lisa do something very naughty and then lie about it so that Lotta gets the blame. What do they do?

From Quiz Circus Days Again

Answer: Steal Britomart's magic wand

Once her hair is shorn, Lotta dons a boy's shirt and shorts, and gets a job riding the horses from Mr. Cyrano. It is his circus where Lucky has been taken after Fric stole her away and sold her.

23. What is the 'final straw' that makes Lotta run away?

From Quiz Circus Days Again

Answer: Lisa and Jeanne are to ride Lotta's own pony in the ring

Lotta is very angry and unhappy, and when Britomart says that Lisa and Jeanne are to ride Black Beauty in the ring that night, she is determined to take him away out of their reach.

24. When Lotta returns to Mr. Galliano's circus with Lucky, Jimmy buys her a pony of her very own to show his gratitude. What do the children name the pony?

From Quiz Hurrah for the Circus!

Answer: Black Beauty

Black Beauty is the pony of Lotta's dreams. She and Jimmy work hard to train him, and Lotta spends hours practising. When Lal and Laddo are due to return, the news comes that Lal is ill and cannot ride in the ring for some time. Laddo was planning to go to yet another circus as his act needs a partner, but thanks to Lotta's hard work with Black Beauty, she can join her father and gets to go into the ring once more.

25. How can the circus folk tell when Mr. Galliano is in a good mood?

From Quiz Mr. Galliano's Circus

Answer: His top hat leans over to one side

26. Where does Lotta run away to?

From Quiz Circus Days Again

Answer: To find Mr. Galliano and beg him to come back

Lotta rides all day and all night, and eventually finds the seaside hotel where the Gallianos are staying while Mrs. Galliano recuperates after her operation. She pours out the whole story of how Britomart is breaking up the circus, and Mrs. Galliano says that they must go back at once and save it. When they arrive, the circus folk rejoice; they have been very worried about Lotta, as well as about their livelihoods. Mr. Galliano sends Britomart, Pierre, and Google away, and the rest of the acts all decide to stay with his circus.

27. Mr. Volla joins Galliano's Circus near the end of "Hurrah for the Circus!"; which animals does he use in his act?

From Quiz Hurrah for the Circus!

Answer: Bears

Mr. Volla has five bears, and everyone agrees that they enjoy performing in the ring. Mr. Volla loves them like children, and they are soon part of the Galliano's circus 'family'.

28. Out of loyalty to Mr. Galliano, Jimmy turns down the offer of a lot of money to go to another circus. How does Mr. Galliano reward him?

From Quiz Mr. Galliano's Circus

Answer: Buys a new caravan for the family

Mr. Cyrano wants Jimmy and Lucky to go to his circus and leave Mr. Galliano, but Jimmy refuses because he is loyal to his friends. When Mr. Galliano hears this he is proud of Jimmy, and buys the Browns a brand new caravan so his mother will be happier travelling with the circus.
