Norman Lindsay Trivia Questions

1. The full name for this children's book is "The Magic Pudding: Being The Adventures of Bunyip Bluegum and his friends Bill Barnacle and Sam Sawnoff". So where do you think this book is set?

From Quiz
The Magic Pudding

Answer: Australia

A bunyip is a mythical creature that lives in Australia just like the Yeti is supposed to live in the Himalayas and The Loch Ness Monster lives in a Scottish lake. In this case, Bunyip Bluegum is a koala. Koalas only live in Australia. Bill Barnacle is a sailor and Sam Sawnoff is a penguin.

2. Thinking about the title, this book is not divided up into chapters, but in another way. What are these divisions called?

From Quiz The Magic Pudding

Answer: Slices

The book is divided into four "slices". There are also songs listed and little stories told in rhyme, as well as verses of a sea song. It was a big book for a children's book. The original printing made the book over 170 pages long.

3. Always quick with humour, Lindsay named the chapters in "The Magic Pudding" what?

From Quiz "The Magic Pudding" by Norman Lindsay

Answer: Slices

Not only did Lindsay's humour shine with his story and illustrations, he also decided to call the chapters of the book slices, as one was eating up a serve of pudding, weren't they?

4. Bunyip, Sam, Bill and the Pudding come across two pudding thieves sharpening a knife, and end up getting into a fight with them. What type of animals are the pudding thieves?

From Quiz 'The Magic Pudding' by Norman Lindsay

Answer: A wombat and a possum

The Possum and the Wombat are old enemies of Bill and Sam, and attempt to steal the pudding throughout the book. Bunyip sits on the Pudding to stop him running away, while Bill and Sam fight the pudding thieves.

5. The story of the book starts when Bunyip Bluegum meets the sailor and the penguin on a walk. They have a magic pudding. Why is it magic?

From Quiz The Magic Pudding

Answer: It grows back when you eat some of it

The pudding, which is called Albert, recreates itself after some of it is eaten. Albert has arms and legs and can walk, but he is bad tempered (which is important later in the book). Bill explains how he and Sam were shipwrecked on an iceberg once and the ship's cook created them the magic pudding. Bunyip is invited to join them for lunch, which is pudding, of course.

6. One of the main characters of "The Magic Pudding" is Bunyip Bluegum. What marsupial is the character?

From Quiz "The Magic Pudding" by Norman Lindsay

Answer: Koala

Lindsay's original illustration has Bunyip Bluegum looking dapper in a jacket, vest and bowtie, checkered trousers, a straw boater hat complete with a walking stick.

7. The story starts with Bunyip Bluegum leaving home on an adventure. Why does he leave home?

From Quiz "The Magic Pudding" by Norman Lindsay

Answer: Uncle Wattleberry's whiskers

Bunyip and Uncle Wattleberry lived in a small tree house. Uncle Wattleberry's whiskers were so large that they got into everything. Bunyip was a tidy koala and finally, he just couldn't handle whiskers in his meal and whiskers everywhere. No matter what hints Bunyip made Uncle Wattleberry just didn't care so he decided to leave home.

8. Bunyip Bluegum meets Bill Barnacle and Sam Sawnoff eating pudding. What are Bill and Sam?

From Quiz "The Magic Pudding" by Norman Lindsay

Answer: Sailor and Penguin

Bill Barnacle is a sailor and Sam Sawnoff is a penguin whom Bunyip Bluegum meets at lunchtime on the first day of his journey. Bill and Sam are eating a magic pudding which makes Bunyip very hungry. The three of them, Bunyip, Bill and Sam become the owners of the magic pudding.

9. Benjamin Brandysnap frees the three friends and joins the three pudding owners as member of their club. What type of animal is Benjamin Brandysnap?

From Quiz The Magic Pudding

Answer: Dog

Now there are four pudding owners and they go after the thieves. Once again Bunyip is clever, and tricks the thieves into a trap when Sam and Bill win the fight to get the pudding back.

10. Everyone wants to own Albert, it is inevitable that Bunyip, Bill, and Sam come across a pair of thieves who succeed in capturing Albert. What marsupials are the thieves?

From Quiz "The Magic Pudding" by Norman Lindsay

Answer: Wombat and Possum

The pudding thieves first attempt to steal Albert is thwarted but the second attempt is successful. Albert is saved from the pudding thieves by Bunyip's trap and Bill and Sam's fists. But that is not the end of it, the pudding thieves try a third time and again succeed in claiming the pudding for themselves.

11. The pudding has to go to court but there is confusion and the pudding owners escape with the pudding. What do they do next?

From Quiz The Magic Pudding

Answer: They decide to stay in one place with the pudding rather than to keep travelling

By stopping the travelling and building a house in Bunyip's tree the four pudding owners thought they would be safe from thieving raids. They were safe as no one ever tried to steal the pudding again and they remained happy together.

12. After the Court case and when everything is done and dusted who do Albert, Bunyip, Bill and Sam retire with?

From Quiz "The Magic Pudding" by Norman Lindsay

Answer: Benjamin Bradysnap

Bunyip, Bill, Sam, and Albert build a house in a tree in Benjamin's garden. Everyone is very happy and settle into an idyllic life in the country. All good friends with the perfect life.
