The Austere Academy Trivia Questions

1. In this book, the Baudelaires are sent to a boarding school. What does the term "boarding school" mean?

From Quiz
A School to Remember: "The Austere Academy"

Answer: A school where children live and sleep in term time

Boarding schools can be very expensive although some may offer partial or full scholarships (so that parents may not have to pay the full price if some requirements are met). Boarding schools have a "duty of care" and act "in loco parentis", terms which here mean that they have to look after their pupils very well, as if the teachers are their parents.

2. "Adversity is a word which here means '_______,' and there are very few people in this world who have had the sort of troubling adversity that follows these three children wherever they go."

From Quiz Lemony's Definitions 5

Answer: trouble

The Baudelaires have been pursued by the evil villain Count Olaf ever since their parents died and left them an enormous fortune. Count Olaf has tried to get his hands on the fortune by trying to marry Violet Baudelaire, by killing their Uncle Monty, by killing Josephine, and by hypnotizing Klaus. Adversity--in other words, Count Olaf--does follow the Baudelaires everywhere they go.

3. On the cover where it asks you to put your name, what does it say?

From Quiz Book the Fifth : Austere Academy

8. What do the Baudelaires do to prevent the snapping crabs from snapping?

From Quiz Lemony's Definitions 5

Answer: unhappy to see small children in their living quarters

The Baudelaires are being forced to live in a shack--a cramped, tin shack with bales of hay for beds, small crabs for pets, and wet fungus for ceiling decorations. In spite of all this, the Baudelaires manage to look on the bright side of things. Territorial, in other instances, can mean 'having to do with territory' or 'very closely attached to one's territory'.
