Mixed Florida Trivia Questions

1. About 70 miles west of Key West is a national park. What is the name of this park that you need to take a sea plane or boat ride to?

From Quiz
Blue Sky in the Sunshine State, Florida!

Answer: Dry Tortugas National Park

You will see the bluest waters around this small island with Fort Jefferson on it. The island was discovered in 1513 along with other small islands around it. The fort was built in 1846 but was never finished. You can walk around inside the fort and on the second level also. There are some cannons and beautiful view points from inside the fort. You can walk along the brick path outside of the fort or hike up your pant legs and walk to the next island during low tide. Dry Tortugas started off as a national monument and was made into a national park in 1992. I spent the day walking around the island and laying out on the beach area. You can snorkel, kayak or just explore for the day. If you're interested, you can camp on the island as well.

2. Which major city is closest to Key West, Florida?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Havana, Cuba

Havana is only 106 miles in a straight line from Key West. The next nearest major city, Miami, is 129 straight-line miles or 160 by car. The closest point of Cuba from Key West is only 94 miles.

3. This world-famous wrestler hails from Tampa. What is his name?

From Quiz Tampa Bay Area, Famous for...

Answer: Hulk Hogan

Hulk's real name is Terry Bollea, and he used to play in bar bands in Tampa before making his break into wrestling. (I think he played bass!) As any fan of the reality TV show "Hogan Knows Best" can tell you, Hulk has lived in the Clearwater area of the Tampa Bay Region. Another famous Tampa wrestler is Dusty "The American Dream" Rhodes, who was famous in the 70s and is credited with helping to turn wrestling into the mainstream money machine it is today.

4. Just before you head south across the bridge to the Florida Keys, you can find this national park on the Atlantic Ocean side of Florida. Where can you find the third longest living coral reef?

From Quiz Blue Sky in the Sunshine State, Florida!

Answer: Biscayne National Park

Biscayne is one of my favorite national parks. The park is there to help protect the mangroves and reefs in the area. The park was designated a national park in 1980. There are so many things to do in the area. You can kayak, snorkel, dive to see shipwrecks or even take a boat ride out to the Boca Chita lighthouse. I personally have attempted to see this lighthouse on three occasions, but the weather never agreed with my trip and I still need to get out there and explore more. All you need is one day and some great weather and you'll see everything there is to see at this park.

5. The central business and tourism district of Key West centers on which street?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Duval St.

Duval Street runs north-south for just over a mile, connecting the Gulf of Mexico with the Atlantic Ocean. The southern end is more residential, with a mix of stately mansions and bungalows, while the northern end caters to the cruise ship trade and other tourists.

6. Along the Gulf of Mexico you can find rather large marine animals. These herbivores love the warm water and love to sleep. What is another name for the 'sea cow'?

From Quiz Blue Sky in the Sunshine State, Florida!

Answer: Manatee

I have been lucky enough to see these massive animals many times in Florida. They move slowly and carefully through the water and are sometimes curious about local boats in the water. They have been known to swim right up to kayaks and small boats. If you don't know about them you would think that you were seeing a very dangerous animal but manatees are far from dangerous. They eat plants, not people. If you go to Tampa area, please check out the Manatee Viewing Center. There's a power plant there that keeps the water warm and the manatees love it and will stay for hours and sometimes days. It's a free admission and lots of fun watching the manatees from the top platform.

7. Which European explorer was the first to visit what became Key West, Florida?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Juan Ponce de Leon

Juan Ponce de Leon was a member of Columbus' second expedition to the New World in 1493, and eventually became governor of Puerto Rico. In 1513 he received a royal charter to explore for lands rumored to be to the north; he landed in what is now Florida and explored the Keys in May 1513.

8. Tampa has also spawned many Major League baseball players that did NOT play at Belmont Heights Little League. Among them is this Hall of Fame member, a member of the elite 3,000-hit club. Who is he?

From Quiz Tampa Bay Area, Famous for...

Answer: Wade Boggs

Wade attended Plant High School in Tampa, where the baseball field has been re-named in his honor. Another Hall-of-Famer who hails from Tampa is Al Lopez, a durable catcher who was inducted into the Hall as a manager, most notably for the White Sox in the 50s and 60s.

9. Take an airboat ride. See alligators! What national park in southern Florida was established in 1947?

From Quiz Blue Sky in the Sunshine State, Florida!

Answer: Everglades National Park

Just west of Miami you'll find 1.5 million acres of swamp land. The home to the Everglades National Park and hundreds of alligators. One of my favorite places to visit is the Shark Valley Visitor Center. You can rent a bike or take your own and ride around a 15 mile loop. Now if you see a big black thing across the path ahead, STOP! It's an alligator! I also visited the southern visitor center, Flamingo Visitor Center, where I took a boat ride through the marsh areas. Plenty of wildlife along with alligators bathing in the sunshine.

10. The oldest Baptist Church in Florida resides in Jacksonville. It was founded in 1838; it is also said to be the oldest interracial Baptist church in the Southern United States. What's the name of this church?

From Quiz A Mixture of Questions on the State of Florida

Answer: Bethel Baptist Institutional Church

The original members of Bethel Baptist Institutional Church (originally called Bethel Baptist Church) were four white people and two African-American slaves. Bethel remained interracial during and after the American Civil War but African-Americans outnumbered whites by a large number. The white members decided some time after the Civil War that they should segregate the church and they attempted to forcefully remove the African-American members of the congregation. It was taken to court and the court decided that the church belonged to the African-American members instead of the white members. The white members left and formed their own church called Tabernacle Baptist Church (later renamed First Baptist Church).

11. The US claimed the Florida Keys in 1822 and made Key West a military strong point that became known as the "Gibraltar of the West". Key West sits at the northern end of the narrowest point of which strategic trade route?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Straits of Florida

The Straits of Florida narrows to 94 miles between Key West and Cuba, making Key West a good location for naval forces that were, in 1822, active against piracy, slave traders and smugglers. In modern times, Key West remains an important base of operations against the smuggling of drugs and migrants.

12. This natural phenomenon occurs in the Tampa Bay region more often than anywhere else in North America.

From Quiz Tampa Bay Area, Famous for...

Answer: lightning

All of the other things happen quite frequently in the area, too, but Tampa did not name its National Hockey League team "The Lightning" for nothing. Originally touted as "The Lightning Capital of the World", some pesky scientists pointed out that parts of South America and western Africa actually receive more lightning strikes, so we have settled on being the Lightning Capital of North America, a designation that is safe from challenge scientifically. Over 2,000 people have been injured and more than 32 killed by lightning in Hillsborough County alone since 1959.

13. What is the name of the 1300 mile hike from the panhandle of Florida to Big Cypress National Preserve?

From Quiz Blue Sky in the Sunshine State, Florida!

Answer: Florida National Scenic Trail

There are two stones that mark the north and south side of this trail. The southern terminus is in Big Cypress and has a large viewing area with a lot of alligators. Now when I questioned hiking through this area where you can see all the alligators, the rangers said not to worry. They said worry more about the Florida panthers. Each of the panthers are tagged and the rangers know which area they are in, but you don't have that knowledge when you're camping and backpacking the trail. This is one trail I have zero interest in completing. The northern terminus is just south of Pensacola in the panhandle of Florida. You walk along the Gulf Islands National Seashore. I have stood on both the north and south side, but nothing in the middle of the 1300 plus miles.

14. The term "conch" was used as early as the 1900s to refer to residents of Key West who were of European origin. Today, what two aquatic adjectives are added to "conch" to indicate native-born vs. long-time-resident conchs?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Saltwater / Freshwater

Saltwater Conchs refers to native-born Key Westers, while Freshwater Conchs were born elsewhere but have lived in Key West for at least seven years. The term "conch" originally applied to Bahamians of European descent, many of whom moved to the Keys after the American Revolution, taking the term with them.

15. Tampa is famous for some culinary contributions. Some very well-known restaurants got their start in the Tampa Bay Area as well. This renowned chicken franchise was born in the Tampa Bay region. What is it?

From Quiz Tampa Bay Area, Famous for...

Answer: Hooters

Hooters is famous for its wings and beer - oh yeah, and maybe for its beautiful waitresses in bright orange short-shorts, too! The original Hooters restaurant opened on Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. in Clearwater in 1983.

16. While you're in Pensacola, make sure that you make a stop to see the Navy aircraft. What is the name of this unique air team?

From Quiz Blue Sky in the Sunshine State, Florida!

Answer: Blue Angels

I have seen the Naval Blue Angels fly on numerous occasions over the years. The group was founded in 1946 and have been performing for years at air shows. Their home station is in Pensacola, where you can visit the National Naval Aviation Museum. They also have a lighthouse that you can visit and climb to the top. Don't go unless you have the proper identification. I was quite impressed with the museum and highly recommend it.

17. Which side controlled Key West during the American Civil War?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Union

Although Florida seceded and became part of the Confederacy, Key West remained in Union control due to the presence of a large Navy base and Fort Zachary Taylor. Many locals sympathized with the Confederacy, but the conflict never resulted in any major battles or skirmishes.

18. Not one, but two huge world-wide restaurant empires originated in the Tampa Bay Area. What famous restaurant chain started in Tampa?

From Quiz Tampa Bay Area, Famous for...

Answer: Outback Steakhouse

The Outback Steakhouse empire began with a single Outback Steakhouse located on Henderson Blvd., in Tampa, which opened its doors in 1988. In addition to the many, many Outback Steakhouse restaurants located nationwide, the Outback company also owns and operates the Carrabba's Italian Grill, Roy's Restaurant, Bonefish Grill, Fleming's Prime Steakhouse, Lee Roy Selmon's BBQ, Cheeseburger in Paradise and Blue Coral Seafood chains. Talk about an empire!

19. How can I have a quiz about Florida and not mention the most popular mouse in the world? Where can you find Mickey?

From Quiz Blue Sky in the Sunshine State, Florida!

Answer: Disney World

Walt Disney knew what he was doing when he bought acres and acres of land in Florida in 1964. He had enough land to build an empire and he knew it. He was a dreamer and dreamed of EPCOT and creating a place where families could go and have fun. The Magic Kingdom opened up on October 1, 1971. I went there my first time in April of 1972. We drove and drove down an orange grove road with nothing in sight! Now you drive down that same road and you'll see hotels, Disney Springs shopping area, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT and MGM Studios lined up along the roadway. It's an empire all from one man's dream that started with a mouse. It seems that every year is another anniversary of a park opening or a Disney character or Walt himself. Each park is special in its own way. With rides, shows and lots of food to eat. My favorite is EPCOT. EPCOT stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. You can take an elevator up to Space 220 and see astronauts in space as you eat your lunch. You can take a test ride in a prototype car in Test Track. You can fly over wonders of the world in Soarin' Around the World. Disney never ever disappoints me, no matter how many times I go.

20. Which mode of transportation provided the major link between Key West and mainland Florida in the period 1912-1935?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Railroad

The Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) extended to Key West in 1912. A hurricane in September 1935 destroyed most of the railway and the FEC could not afford to rebuild due to the Great Depression. The federal government built an automobile highway over the railroad route, finishing US Highway 1 in 1938.

21. Which Caribbean pirate was said to have invaded and sacked Tampa in the late 1700s?

From Quiz Tampa Bay Area, Famous for...

Answer: Jose Gaspar

Popularly known as "Gasparilla," the actual existence of this man is in some doubt. Nevertheless, Tampans annually hold the Gasparilla Pirate Festival in his honor; a Mardi-Gras style event that features parades with garish floats, a mock pirate invasion of the city, beads and grog aplenty, and the occasional bit of female nudity on the city's streets. Gasparilla was also known as the "last of the buccaneers", hence the inspiration for the name of Tampa's National Football League franchise, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "Arrr, Matey!" (By the way, William Bonney wasn't a pirate at all. He was better known as the western gunslinger "Billy the Kid!")

22. What is the oldest continually inhabited European-founded city in the United States?

From Quiz Blue Sky in the Sunshine State, Florida!

Answer: St. Augustine

St. Augustine, Florida was founded in 1565 by a Spaniard named Don, with a lot of names after that. St. Augustine is on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and also is home to the San Marcos National Monument. The monument is a fort that you can walk around inside and out. You'll be able to see musket and cannon demonstrations on site. If you are traveling with children, make sure that you have them earn their Junior Ranger badge while there. When you think of the first thanksgiving, you think of Plymouth Rock and the pilgrims, but the first thanksgiving actually started here about 55 years before then. Probably the most popular thing to do in St. Augustine is to hit the beaches. Enjoying the Florida sunshine and the sandy beach!

23. There's a Florida city written in this sentence. Can you tell me what that is?

From Quiz A Mixture of Questions on the State of Florida

Answer: Florida City

Florida City (nickname "Trap City") is located in Miami-Dade County in Southern Florida. The original name (based on a land promotion) was Detroit, founded in 1910. The name was changed to "Florida City" in 1914 when it became incorporated. Florida City is the southernmost city in the US not situated on an island. It also serves as an entrance to the main section of the Everglades National Park.

24. A neighborhood and military installation in Key West bear the name of which US President that had his "Winter White House" there?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Truman

President Harry Truman spent 175 days over 11 visits in Key West, first visiting on advice of his doctor for a vacation in a warm spot. Truman realized that with modern communications and air travel, he could continue to conduct the nation's business while away from Washington, DC.

25. What world-wide institution is now commonplace in every nook and cranny of the globe, but started Tampa?

From Quiz Tampa Bay Area, Famous for...

Answer: First regularly scheduled airline flight

The world's first scheduled passenger airline flight took place on January 1, 1914, just 10 years after the Wright Brothers' inaugural Kitty Hawk flight. The flight was from St. Petersburg to Tampa, a mere 21 miles across Tampa Bay. The single passenger, and thus the world's first commercial airline passenger, was ex-Mayor of St. Petersburg A. C. Pheil, who paid $400 for the ticket in a special auction for the first flight. The flight time for this first flight was 23 minutes. The pilot was Tony Jannus. The Benoist company operated this air route for four months, with two flights daily, six days a week. The regular airfare for the trip was $5. Tampa Bay - birthplace of commercial aviation!

26. In response to the Mariel Boat Lift in 1982, the US Border Patrol set up a roadblock in the northern Florida Keys to attempt to catch illegal immigrants from Cuba. In protest, Key West declared its "independence" and took which name?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Conch Republic

The Conch Republic is celebrated each April 23rd with parades and parties. The name Conch Republic remains popular with locals, and tourists buy a lot of Conch Republic merchandise.

27. Key West has more than doubled in size since the 1940s due to what?

From Quiz Key West, Florida

Answer: Landfill

The New Town area in the eastern part of Key West was built on landfill and contains the Key West airport, residences and shopping. Old Town in the west is built on more stable rock and coral, and contains the stately old mansions of the Key West Historic District.

28. Tampa has also earned a reputation as one of the leading cities in the U.S for what type of less-than-desirable (to some) business?

From Quiz Tampa Bay Area, Famous for...

Answer: strip clubs

While any major city in the U.S. has problems with all these things, Tampa has earned the perhaps-dubious distinction of being considered one of the leading cities in the U.S. for the best strip clubs, the most (in)famous being the Mons Venus club on Dale Mabry Highway. Whenever Tampa hosts a Super Bowl, these clubs are filled to overflowing, the parking lots jammed full of stretch limos.
